Why so little mention of Kimbers in one form or another? Are they no good, overpriced, not 1911s, or what?

Sig 1911s are pricey, but haven't heard anything bad about them. Para Ordnance has some double action 1911s, too. But you'd be paying for that as well. Colts are expensive. If you were to come across a Gold Cup, you'd probably be ready to go out of the box as far as accuracy goes. Got an old Gold Cup around that gets shot a little here and there, and that is one smooth gun. Tolerances are small. This baby is a great shooter with the accuracy that would be expected. The sale tag, which belonged to my dad's uncle, says it was bought like 1962 or 1963 for something like $260. Its got some beautiful Colt bluing on it.

Well depends on how far in to upgrades you want to go. Simple little things like a full length guide rod can help smooth things out. You can get expensive and get new trigger parts to lighten pull. You can get your slide tightened up, get some snug barrel bushings and the like to try to get it more accurate. I guess it depends on how far you want to go. Match barrels could be an option too.

Price might be one thing. But, I did pay for mine. I have been very happy with it so far, and put more than 500 rds through it with minimal problems. I had always wanted a Commander style pistol, with a 4" barrel, and finally got it with my TLEII. Its got the night sights too, so low light or night shooting situations, if that should ever arise, they are there. I really like those night sights.

Just showing my age..............I had the Series 70, never fired the series 80 but the series 70 was so good for me I never felt the need to upgrade.

It was one of the handguns I had to surrender when the gun ban came in.

A little polishing on the ramp and a match bushing will do wonders for accuracy and performance.

For the price I'd check out Charels Daly they make a great looking 1911 and if they are anything like their shotguns they gotta be worth the $. For accuracy when I bought mine they told me nothing was better than a Dan Wesson (thats what I bought). For looks, feel, and authinticity Colt and Springfield take the cake. But like others have said for an all around good gun that you can put add ons on like tac lights or lazers and aftermarkey grips easily go with the Taurus. Almost all namebrand 1911's are good and you CAN'T go wrong with a 1911.

For the money, I think you get a LOT more pistol with the PT 1911. Look at what it comes with. Then look at the cost of adding all that onto another gun !!

I have a cheap RIA, medium Springfield, medium-pricey S&W 1911PD, Colt Gold Cup Series 80, Kimber CDP II, and ultra-pricey Fusion.

the Fusion was hands down my favorite until I got the S&W. Wow!

All of them are good, but the S&W and Fusion are heads above the rest.

S&W used to make frame/slide for Kimber - not sure if that's the case now. I have nothing against the Kimber, but they use some non-metal parts in places and their mags are crap. My Kimber suffered several FTF's until I switched to Wilson Combat mags.

IMO the only good Colts are the 70 Series 45's. I hate the 80 Series and sold my Officer's Model because of that 'safety' feature.

This weekend I bought a Taurus 1911 AR pistol because it has so many 'custom' features that in Taurus is STANDARD. Such as lowered and relieve ejection port, adjustable trigger, 'Commander' style hammer, raised grip safety, slide realese on BOTH sides of the slide, beveled where you put the magazine in to help seating the magazine faster and easier, rails for useing lights, etc, etc, etc

I am a glock guy, I was thinking about a 1911 since all the guys at the range say they are so grate. I would go with a Taurus just because you get so much, for so littel, and they have a grate warrentee? But folks seam to like the Rock Island Armory, but I really don't feel comfortable getting a firearm made in the Philapenes that country is not exactly known for their precision engenering, for that matter nither is Brazil....So I go back to Springfeild Armory? Keep in mind I would rather get a new gun instead of a used one, and I would like to spend less than $700.00.
This is why I do not own a single 1911.
From what I am reading owning a 1911 any 1911 is more of a journey than a destination.

Looks great! Did you spec it out, or just buy one "off the rack"? I see ambi safety, adjustable sights, "memory" pad, cross drilled trigger, hollowed hammer, close cut gripping surfaces fore and aft on the slide and the enhanced beavertail. What other goodies are on it?

To be honest with you I didn't do a lot of research before buying it. I did some though. I am new to 1911's and primarily carried S&W 4516's for the last couple of decades. I decided to upgrade to full size autos since I came into a small amount, and I mean small amount, of money recently.

The Baer was in the shop on consignment and I had recently purchased a Colt 1911 that was giving me a little problem with FTF's and FTE's so I sent it back to the factory for work. I sold my Smiths and was without a carry and the research I did led me to the Baer. Since it had just been put on consignment I took it as a sign. Also, I had considered sending the Colt in to have a reliability package done on it and the Baer won't need that. I still might send the Colt but that can wait, it is more of a collector's gun.

I will be calling Les Baer Custom in the morning. I want to change the ambi safety and see if they have a trigger that doesn't have the serrations. It feels uncomfortable after a box or two of ammo, I'm used to a smooth trigger. The pull is very smooth though, only 4 lbs.

Recently picked up a SA 1911A1 with the stainless steel slide/frame, wood grips (with U.S. inscribed on them), and the matte top to prevent glare I assume.. got it for 600 out the door on black friday. Buddy had one just like it but the slide and frame were gun metal color (the dark grey).. I tested it out first and was shooting better than my glock 19 from the start. Good gun- I like it and 600 wasn't terrible to own something like that.

I have two Colt COmmander Lightwieghts with the stainless slides and alloy frames. One is in 38 Super, and the other is 45 ACP. Both finction great, but I really need to dump the 38 super ammo and slide/barrel and go with something more common.

I have no complaints about either of them, both being slim and could be concealed if needed. I guess the only negative is the price being now around $950 for each of these, if not more. I could buy 2 Berettas or Glocks for the cost of one Colt.

My vote is for my Norinco 1911A1 . It is my first 1911 and I payed 300 for her. Only 150 rounds through her and she likes everything I throw at her . I heard many of the Great custom builders loved the Norinco
