I have the Ultimate Hunter and Recon 1, neither has failed me yet.. Great knives, but they do have a good price tag to go with them...

I like Cold Steel, SOG and Gerber Knives the best. I also have a few Buck and Schrade knives I am fond of.

If Cold Steel would just drop those dam plastic handles and go to anodized aluminum I would like them a lot more, a large Voyager with aluminum handles would be really tough, just sayin'.

Just as there are gun enthusiasts who fashion their own custom grips for their "perfect" gun, I'm sure there are knife enthusiasts who do the same.

Aluminum barstock can be purchased fairly easily, and it is easier to tool/shape than steel.

Gerber blades are all I use. I have a Gerber skinner, multitool, and a 4" folding non-serrated blade.

theres a gun and knife show at the 4H fairgrounds where i'll be going to a swap meet in october on like the second weekend i believe and they always have a TON of knives and hundreds maybe even over a thousand guns on show and for sale. last year i bought a S&W folder for $10. special ops i think. very nice knife considering the few that ive used regularly. i'll look for some gerber, buck, and maybe SOG and Cold steel depending on if theres good deals

Go join up at allaboutpocketknives.com and click on something that scrolls across the top. That will take you to the marketplace where some really good stuff can be found!

My favorite slipjoint is an Imperial Cigar 3 blade with Carbon Steel that cost me a whopping 5 bucks from another AAPK member!

Cheap knife ??

I also had an exacto knife and a box cutter but i would like a good fixed blade hunting knife for squirrel, pheasant, deer, rabbit, anything i might hunt. So one of my questions is who sells good, cheap, well made hunting knives?

another question is would something like this work good for getting a hunting knife razor sharp? Google Image Result for http://www.bwknives.com/images/foto_noze/knife-sharpener-sksharp_800.jpg

Do all hunting knives have the same angle on the blade? Do knife sharpeners work for all angle knives?
I have been making knifes for 30 years. There is no such thing as a good cheap knife. You can have good or you can have cheap but not both.

I'm buying a good knife: 8-in chef or santoku???

I have some Christmas money to spend and I decided to buy a good knife. I've been looking at Henkel's Professional line and am wondering which, if you had to choose between them is better... The 8-in chef or the 8-in santoku? They are both about the same price and I'm a bit puzzled as to what they do differently (apart from the fact that one is significantly heavier and the other has "aeration" dimples on its blade).
Also, in order to keep these as sharp as possible, I'm wondering what are my best options:
1. a sharpener (like Henkel's) AND a honing stick made of brushed steel
2. a sharpener and a diamond-encrusted honing steel
3. just a diamond-encrusted honing steel
4. something else?
thanks for telling me what works best for you!

Wally World sells a nice Winchester w/ gut hook, stainless steel w/ rose wood handle for $12 or $14. Iv'e used mine for a couple of years now and like it for gutting and skinning, holds an edge as good as most. I also use an Old Timer by Schrade that I found buried in the trunk of my father-in-laws old car. It was com-pleatly encased in rust, but after a couple of hours of heavy sanding and polishing it looks like new except for a few deep ruts pits that didn't come all the way out. Had to make a new sheath cuz the old leather was hard and cracked. That Schrade steel took some time to hone but holds an edge you can shave with extremely well.
As for sharpening, that sharpener works good but to really get a razer edge you can't beat an Arkansas sand stone and mineral oil to fine tune an edge.

I second the Spyderco sharpmaker, & the only knife I carry anymore is a Benchmade, The Griptillian is their most affordable American made knife. Has all the features of their higher end knives. Good steel, best lock, ergonomic. 2 sizes. The 550 Grip has been my work knife for years. http://www.benchmade.com/products/550HG

The Ontario RAT series, all made of AUS 8 High Carbon steel. Very good knives. The AUS 8 while it is softer than most stainless it is easy to sharpen and holds a good edge. I just got the RAT 1 folder and its nice. Comes beyond razor sharp.

I own many but my favs are Gerber and Buck (i hope to get a benchmade soon ) had a nice CRKT went dull to quick for me.. but it was a good lil knife. I carry the Gerber everyday its a great tool and stays fairly sharp.
A large % of good knife is having the right one that is comfortable in your hand. Blade size, thickness, handle design, handle material, weight of the knife and other factors all contribute to feel, and the best knife in the world is useless if it doesn't fit right an d you dont use it

im interested in number 34,about 1/5 of the way down the page. i dont want to get one if i cant handle it first. id much rather buy one in person at a store so i can get its feel than just order one and hope for the best

well in the hurry to get something before deer season was over and before squirrel season was over, i decided to pick up the bushmaster knife set from meijer...5 knives, one sharpening rod, $25.00 i believe. comes with a cleaver, a gutting/general purpose knife, a filet knife, a long steak knife, and...maybe it was only 4, or maybe im just forgetting one. anyone, it came in the cheapest plastic box available but the edges are almost razor sharp and they have a great feel to them besides the cheapish feeling grips. they should do just fine for what i use them for though

Another vote for the Buck 110.
I've accumulated about ten of them over time; I keep one on my hip, one in each car, one on the tractor, one in the shed, one each in the tacklebox & toolbox, and a couple in drawers around the house.
I've received other brands as gifts over the years- Gerber, Schrade, S&W, Winchester, Case, and a few others, but most I've either broken (I don't always use them for their intended purpose, lol) or just didn't like enough to keep up with & were eventually lost.
There are a lot of great knives out there, but Bucks are the only ones I've ever spent my own money on.
