Thumans natural casings deep fried until they split with some good mustard and a yoohoo. Nothing better. Hiram's in Fort Lee, NJ deep has the best dogs, my dad would bring us there all the time and you had to get yoohoo with your dogs. I havent been there in awhile and now I think I will have to plan a road trip.

when i was working at Lakehurst NAS one of my co-workers always raved about Sarbett's hot dogs, i never tasted one, but i bet they are good.
used to take our girls to Philly to see the Christmas displays, nothing like a hot dog and hot chocolate on a cold Philly street.

I like grilling Hot Dogs and putting them oppisite the charcoal. I'll ad a chunk of hickroy and saserfrass wood.
Then I'll go tend to preparing what ever else I'm going to cook.
I'll also aply bar b Que sauce to them a few times and eat the hot dogs as a side item.

It's the snap of the natural casing, along with that garlic tang, that makes Nathan's dogs what they are. I MISS a proper Nathan's since leaving New York. In a pinch, Hebrew National or Sabretts will do the trick if I am craving street meat, but IMHO Nathan's is where it's at!

As to NY Vs. Chi-town I refer to the style and not the location.
I like Chicago style pizza very much, but there is just something about the thin greasey NY style that apeals to me on a daily basis, the thick meal in a slice Chicago style is more of every now and then thing for me.

My only encounter with Nathan's was while I was in Kuwait. I never had the actual hot dogs, but their chicken fingers and lemonade were awesome! Definitely made for a better option than the chow line.

Dirty water dogs, sabretts hot dogs from a street vendor are a pretty close second in my book. Ever notice theres no bathroom and the saurkraut is yellow at these carts.

I agree that you have to cook the hot dogs in hot water to get the right flavor, unless you grill them over mesquite on the back porch or the patio. But I also think the brand makes a big difference.
I don't like the casings on the Sabrett's frankfurters; they snap when you bit them and it's off-putting. The Nathan's dogs are pretty good, but I think the Boar's Head hot dogs are the best, followed by Hebrew National.
I have to be very careful about what hot dogs I feed to Junior, because he is in a gluten-free, casein-free, soy-free diet. That puts many of the local brands out of the running. But generally, I've found the darker the dog before cooking, the better it tastes. It's just a matter of which variety of spices each uses that matches up best with your taste buds.

speaking of dirty water dogs and carts. NJ has a great law, hard to believe but true. NJ has a law that a disabled vet can operate his cart any where, even where local ordinances do not allow them. there have been several towns and casinos in AC, that tried to drive them away and the law and judges came down hard on them. i hope its still the case.

I prefer a grilled Bratwurst with grilled peppers over ANY hot dog. My father is in the meat business and the only ones he says that are up to his standards (meat used and processed) are Hebrew National. He has visited many a meat packing plants over the years and has told me what goes into hot dogs and Bolonga. Lots of glands, organs, scraps and other parts from several different types of animals. At least with the Hebrew National hot dogs they are all beef (meat not glands or organs).

I like Nathans dogs too. They are expensive compared to many others but worth the splurge! I have never had a Nathans other than store bought. I do like the Hebrew National dogs too... UMMMMM actually just finished the rest of my Nathans dogs with a bit of leftover chili yesterday!
I like my dogs either grilled or I will put some olive oil in the bottom of a pan with some spices and cook the dog on the stove rolling back and forth...
thanks... now I am hungry for a dog!
ketchup is a sin on dogs! Mustard & Sourkraut are my fav's

Cross Hair, you can start a flamewar discussing condiments on hot dogs. I favor barbeque sauce and sweet onions, myself. Put the onions in the bun (it's got to be a real New England-style bun to be right), add the hot dog, pour on the barbeque sauce. That's a good dog and it has three of the four major food groups in it, so it's not even bad for you - provided it's a good hot dog to begin with.

For years I didn't understand what the big deal was about HN, until I had one...WOW  I do Oscar Meyer Premeium, their Beef & their Cheese Dogs...and Hebrew National...with the occasional Nathans & Ballpark  I don't even look at any other brands anymore.
I like using Hickory Chips in the grill when I do dogs
Heck, great for brats & burgers too
Mayo is a Sin...but Miracle Whip...now THAT is a hot dog condiment
