Range report on S&W PC .460 XVR

Well, this afternoon at my friends backyard range went very well. His range goes p to 75 yards, but I spent all my time taking shots at 25 yards away. Smith & Wesson already had the sights perfectly zeroed in at 25 yards for the 200-grain colt 45 loads I was using. Here's a picture of the first three rounds I put through it at 25 yards away.MobileMe Gallery

After that I loaded up some of the 454 Casull loads in 300-grain XTP Mag. I aimed for the exact same spot I did with the 45 colt, and the grouping was even better, but it was a lot lower on the target. They are the three shot group in the plywood directly under the middle of the target.

The shot grouping with the 200 grain .460 Hornandy XTP, were all over the place, but I would attribute that to my inexperience with such a large round. However, the recoil doesn't hurt, it's just a hell of a lot harder to get good accuracy. There was a 2 shot grouping with the .460 that was right next to the three shot Casull grouping. Shown here: http://gallery.me.com/karrakerc/1000...12535957030001

Lastly I decided to aim for a good group with the 45 colt before I went back to hunting. This was a 5 shot group with the 45 colt ammo at 25 yards. http://www.me.com/ro/karrakerc/Galle...12535957530001

After this I went out hunting with the gun for rabbits with some 45 colt loaded in it. The first rabbit I got was 30 yards away and it took a few tries to get him, but it just ran back and forth. I eventually got it, I was shooting at it with no rest. I had shot it in the spine, but was aiming for the head, that wobble is something I'll just have to learn to work with. Here's it's first taste of blood, don't worry it's not graphic.

A little later I found another rabbit about 25 yards away from me, the sun had just set, and I took a shot at it and missed, cocked the hammer again and took another shot as it stopped in front of the brush. Got it right through the eyes and it fell right there.(GRAPHIC!!!) http://gallery.me.com/karrakerc/1000...12535950700001

Alas, here is my gun. I'll have to bring out a better camera and get some video next time I shoot it. It's a blast!! http://gallery.me.com/karrakerc/1000...12535956000001

that is a sexy piece. ive added that gun or the S&W 500 to my list of guns to buy and its been bumped up the list to behind my 1911. i wouldnt get the super performance shop model like you did cause im not sure ill ever really make it out hunting so just need a big safe queen. i like the idea of the 460 shooting 3 different rounds but i fell in love with the 4 inch 500 so ill have to do some soul searching after i get my 1911

I'll bet your neighbors feel much safer now that you've rid the forest of these deadly animals.

There's a bunch of trees and brush around his place, and the closest neighbor to my friends house is actually his dad, and he's the one I do all the rabbit hunting for. I love your avatar Doc, it made me lol. Supposedly their's wild pigs and coyotes in the area too, but I haven't seen any. I've only seen Turkeys, deer, and small game out here. Up where I go hunting in MN, there's timber wolves, and last year one came within 20 yards of a friend who was sitting on his butt waiting for a deer to come along. He heard something running through the brush, and then lost track of it, like a minute later a Timber Wolf walks onto the path, looks at him and growls. My friend had his gun up on his shoulder pointing at him and then it sauntered off.

Well, I took the gun to the range and shot some more 45 colt for it, the sights are dead on for 45 colt, and I still haven't changed em for the .460 or .454 rounds. I'm going to stick a scope on it soon but I have to decide how much money I'm going to spend. I'd really like to get at least a 2-7 burris scope with a ballistic plex reticle. However, I need to save some money now. Here's a few memorable shots from the range today.

This is when I shot at a target that was off-center with a .460 round and it went through the post holding the cardboard. Oops.

Here's a shot of the gun on the bench.

Here's some of the ammo I was shooting today.

Here's a 3 shot group with the Hornandy 200 grain .460 XTP Mag round loaded, 25 yards with open sights.
