roofing update

Just wanted to say thanks to all the G&G folks who gave me their two cents on re-roofing my house. Your advice was a big help in my decision making.

The crew is up there, just about finished. Complete tear-off, replacement of a small amount of rotted wood, 30 lb. roofing paper, 30-year shingles nailed on, ridge caps on, vents and stacks replaced, two additional vents added, drip edge installed, flashing where needed, and good clean-up of debris that is about to be hauled off. What they are doing right now is sawing up an obsolete 12' diameter dish antenna, a now useless eyesore from years gone by. It will go with the debris. I'm pleased with the work and the price!

Got 5 quotes, they guy I went with was in the middle range but was the one I was most comfortable with. Local, small outfit, the owner came out to make the quote and spent a lot of time up on the roof with his crew. I prefer doing business with a company like that. He also was timely, started the job when he said he could. This was nice, two large companies I talked to were very vague about when they could do it (seemed like whenever we run out of bigger jobs to do.") I went with the guy who actually wanted the job.

Sounds good. I bet it's nice to be able to watch the people doing the work. I've always been on the other end, and it's a little less pleasant lol.

Thumbs up

cheapblaster...Everything you had them do made sense. Did they clean up debris in your attic? Did they use an electromagnet or another high powered magnet to clean up dropped nails in your lawn and shrubs? Did they reinstall your gutters, and if so have you put water in them to see if they drain properly?

Glad to see this thread has been of some help to you.

Oxford, have found, so far, six old nails. They pulled the whole thing off without taking down the gutters, without any damage to them. That's pretty good! There is a lot of crap in the attic but nothing me and my shop vac can't deal with in a short time - did not want to pay for that and used it in the negotiation. Less work for them....hmmm?

jmp - I've been on the other end of that, too. Remembered to treat the help right.

Earl, right on, I feel the same.

Now that it is done I'm very happy! I do not expect any water through the roof this winter. Did not have any last winter but knew, after looking at my roof two months ago, that it would not stay dry this year. Where I live in California it just does not rain in the summer, but can rain like anything in the winter. Looking forward to those cold, rainy nights when I feed the fireplace and enjoy a snuggle with my sweetie -without the sound of water dripping into buckets!
