I just got back from a week visit in New Mexico, it has been years since I was there before. (only passing thru) My friends live in Santa Fe, it was nice but a little too artsy-fartsy for me. my girlfriend and I took the rental car and did a lot of exploring of Nat'l parks, forests, pueblo ruins and musems. Having only been in the Southern part before, I was supprised at the diversity of the terrain. I would love to go back and do some hunting! I was impressed by the friendly people and courteious drivers. (a far cry from South Florida where a turn signal means the car next to you has to block your lane change!) You all have a great state and I hope to return.

Yea, Sante Fe and Taos are where most of the liberal/art population lives. Both are very nice towns to visit or to go skiing but I wouldn't want to live up there. As you said, the terrain is very diverse all over the state. There are excellent mountains to go back packing in in the Gila wilderness in the southern part of the state. There are also quite a few lakes here and there. There are also some really cool military bases, missile ranges, national labs, and airforce bases all over the state. I like the food down here in the southern part but that is because I grew up down here.
Well, I hope you enjoyed your visit and you do come back. The hunting is pretty good I hear.

don't you hunt or do you mean you didn't draw a tag? I was reading in a local outdoor news paper up there that a lot of NM hunters are pissed because they don't draw a tag year after year. I can sympathise with them, some of my favorite hunting places down here have a quota and you have to win a draw. but here if you don't get a quota hunt you can still go hunt somewhere else. I think NM is drawn for the animal tag.

No, I am not a hunter. None of my family was so I wouldn't even know where to begin or what to do. None of my good friends are hunters either so I couldn't go with them to learn how. Anyway, I think you have to draw a tag for certain animals and others have a limit or something. I do know that getting a tag for an Oryx is extremely hard but you can still hunt them here. There is another thread here about "drawing out". You could ask more about it there.

Are you SURE you were in NEW MEXICO??
Either you were in a different place, or there was a Drivers Ed Instructor convention in town. Most New Mexicans would take months to notice if new cars started coming without turn signals. Normally, we only see one signal around here - the 1/2 Peace sign!

I moved to NM two months ago, but I feel your pain about Florida drivers. I lived in central Florida for 22 of the last 27 years and moved out west. Colorado (except Denver & Springs) seems to have the most courteous drivers. I think Albuquerque, OTOH, is where Larry the Cable Guy got his idea for his "green flag racing" shtick. Everybody drafts and races to the next traffic signal.

Count me as one of the conservative members of the Santa Fe community. There are others like me here and hopefully after the next election there will be more!

Interesting post. I should like to touch on each subject in turn.
First, welcome to the People's Democratic Republic of Santa Fe. I am fourth generation New Mexican and if Santa Flush and Taos weren't between me and some of my happiest hunting grounds, I would never go there.
Second, if the masses discovered the charms of NM during September, we would have a population of 55 million. Fortunately, the spring winds and summer heat tends to discourage anyone with any sense.
Third, the hunt draws can be frustrating. I hunt a great deal. I know folks, myself included, that haven't drawn a big game tag for anything for, in some cases, years. I haven't drawn in either of the last two years. Some folks seem to draw every year. On the other hand the Dept of Game and Fish has to manage a limited resource in a situation where the demand in almost unlimited. My concern is the youth. My youngest, who is as gung ho as they come, has never drawn his big game tag. If we don't keep those future voters in the fold, the future of hunting, fishing, gun ownership, and all we hold dear is that much dimmer.
Fourth, I do not drive fast. I'm qualifying. Besides the worst accident I ever saw was caused by someone who signalled a left turn and actually did!!!!
I wanted to add to the loving driving experience here in the greater Albuquerque area. Driving into a walmart parking lot; someone in the opposite vehicle decided to throw a candy bar at my drivers side window, hitting the window edge and almost me in the eye. If my wife was not in the vehicle, temper would win and I would chased the driver down! She calmed my temper down ; could not tell if they were adults or teenagers.

This could happen in any state. As an example, when I lived in CA and was working in Santa Monica (another left leaning city much like Santa Fe) I was driving my car on the way to lunch and was shot at while stopped at a traffic light. Fortunately, the guy used a paint pellet gun so I wasn't injured mainly because of his bad aim, he hit the door just below the window. A few inches higher on his aim and it would have hit me in the face.

Looks like NM is cracking down on speeders and distractions in the car! They are going to stop the cellular addiction!
Thats a good one!!! I see off duty cops on the cell phone in their units. However most cops I run into do have a sense of humor. I actually drag raced an unmarked Impalla on Paseo del norte. He had me by 1/4 car length when I quite at 90 mph. then a ford truck was flying by us and he hit the lights. the guy slowed down and the lights went off. See, sense of humor. Over all the drivers here suck. Some things they need to learn, The on ramp is used to get up to hiway speed. 2 If you are in the left lane and a car comes up behind you MOVE OVER! 3 when the car next to you signals a lane change, LET THEM IN!!! 4 cool down on the aggresiveness, Most people have guns on them!!!!

The same studies that warn of the dangers of talking on cell phones also state that there is almost NO statistical difference in the danger of a hand-held phone vs using a hands-free device - it is the mental distraction that is the danger. Yet, all the laws in N.M. address only using your hand-held phone while driving.
Once again, laws are passed which are seldom enforced and make little sense. Oh - I forgot - "If it will save only one life, it will be worth it."

Yeah some of the cops are cool but not all. I got stopped on Paseo a few months ago for not having my seat belt buckled. I had just pulled out of Smith's and forgot but I was only going up to Trader Joe's when he saw me. I quickly buckled it when he dropped in behind me but he hit the lights anyway. When he got to the window he commented that I didn't have it buckled a minute ago. I told him I remembered when I saw him and he laughed and said well at least I was honest and let me go. Nice guy and reasonable. Rio Rancho cops aren't as nice. I got stopped for going 55 in a 50 while others were passing me and he just said we can't stop everybody. Ha ha very funny.
