Scoping my SKS

I've decided to scope my Norinco SKS in the near future.
I took it to the range today, I fired four, 3rnd groups using Yugoslavian komada (brass case) 123gr. I *HIGHLY* recommend this ammo if you can find it, you'll see why.

I next fired three, 3rnd groups and one left over (10rnds total) at the bottom left of the target using Wolf 122gr. Although it didn't do as well as the Komada out of this weapon, The groups were very impressive.
It was such a LOVELY target, I decided to keep it and tend to my older daughter so she could shoot for a while.
You're not gonna believe these groups came out of a Chinese SKS!

I'm going to post the target tomorrow when I get batteries for my camera.

Looking forward to seeing the target Dragunov. New to the SKS but was very pleased with accuracy from the 1 unprepared outing.

Ok, I'm trying to upload a good picture of this target, please be patient.
This is the best picture I could upload, but I think It's clear enough to get the idea
(Sorry 'bout that).
I wanted to get on the 100yd range but there was no room so I settled for the fifty.
There were 4/3rnd groups, 12rnd total.
The center group marked "1" is the first group I fired out of a cold barrel, WOW!!! This group measured at .35 and I was very happy with that . I didn't have much time so I decided to fire all the groups on the same target.
I adjusted my aim to hit the lower right corner of the target, This one was about .6
I don't know what happened with group three as it opened up to about .75, probably due to my lack of shooting for the last 15yrs. This one was supposed to group on the "0" line on the middle, rh side edge of the orange square.
The final group was aimed at the upper rh corner of the square. It was also an outstanding .35!, but I was a little disappointed with the low aim (Once again, operator error), but certainly not the group!
These groups were fired off a sandbag at 50yds with KOMADA (Yugoslavian) 123grain, brass case. This ammo costs a little more than normal (about $2 more per box) and only comes in 15rnd boxes, but as you can see, It's WEEEEEEELL worth it! I have 280rnds of this stuff and will only use it for hunting or some other exceptional circumstance.
After a barrel cool down of five minutes, I loaded up ten rounds of Wolf 122gr steel case.
I aimed at the lower LH corner of the black square. I think my front sight creeps a little to the left as the weapon was shooting to the right a little.
Group 1 was about .9, but I expected larger groups with the wolf.
The second group was the second best at .75 and the third was the best group, barely at about .7. The round with the "x" through it was just a chamber emptier and not fired for a group as I didn't want to spoil any of the other groups.
In all fairness, I didn't clean the weapon after the Komada as there was virtually NO fouling in the rifle after I fired it. I believe it's corrosive but burns pretty clean. Also, There was a bit more recoil with the Komada.
The Rifle:
Norinco SKS with a customized Choate ambidextrous stock that I re-fitted to fit my left hand.
A gritty, very crappy trigger.
Pathetic sights.
Conclusion:
1...This is an exceptional and consistant example of an SKS.
2...Komada ammo is the best I've ever seen in this caliber.
3...This is an outstanding example of the potential accuracy of this ammo and rifle combination.
4...Mathematically, this is a .7 to 1.2" MOA rifle with Komada ammo!, and a 1.4 to 2" MOA with crappy Wolf ammo! It has the potential to be even better with a trigger job, scope or better sights and a little more practice on my part.
5... I'm not afraid to shoot deer due to poor or iffy accuracy.
6...After 15yrs off of shooting, I'm still a fair shot.

This is my 11yr old Daughter Vanessa posing with the rifle I did the ammo test with.
The second picture is right after the moment you piss her off and right before the moment she shoots you. j/k.

I've got less than $80 in this scope and mount set up. The mount doesn't seem to move at all, it doesn't block the iron sight picture and so far after two trips to the range the zero seems pretty steady.

Thumbs up

I have a top-cover mount for my Yugo, that has allowed me to do some amazingly tight groups with good commercial and handload ammo. It stays tight right now, being a new mount and fitted to this action - but recoil will loosen it over time.
I need that side mount! Definitely the way to scope an SKS.

I went shooting on Veteran's Day. I finally got some bench time with my newly scoped SKS. After a couple of adjustments, I managed a 4 inch group at 100 yards. With a little practice, I can better that by half.

So, I cleaned it and put it back in the safe. The real test will be how far from zero it starts out on the next trip to the range.

While I have no need to scope a SKS, it appears that much better mounts are available than there used to be. What a handy little deer/coyote rifle !!

I did the receiver replacement scope mount and just bought a ClearI 100 yd scope for mine. Fits really nice. Too bad I don't have the time or funds to get it completely sighted in.

I love those little scout mounts! It'll work very well with a long eye relief scope as well if you ever want to change!

Me neither....unless I'm shooting past about 50 yards!

My tired old eyes don't like that.

Res45, The Tasco ($32.97) at Walmart works very well out to 50 yards. My objective was to be able to see the sights as well as the target, mission accomplished!!!! My target skills ain't what they used to be, But this setup is a great way to start improving. I'll post a pic next time to the range, if it's worth sharing.
