Mdl 70 fit and finish

Anyone have quality issues with fit and finish? My stock contacts the side of the barrel. Not under it. Kinda bugs me as it is supposed to be free floated. Gun has never been shot before. This is the older version around 2001 vintage.

I picked up a nice M70 in .300 Win mag not long ago and the action screws were too loose, the stock was touching the barrel, the trigger was miserably heavy, it had a fair amount of copper build-up although it didn't appear to be shot much.
A long afternoon later it was cleaned with bore polished, free-floated (I use feed & wax to seal), snuggly seated, and the trigger was breaking at around 2-3 lbs. and crisp. Since then I've instituted a break-in regiment that is on going. It's already MOA using just plain old 180 grain core-loks. I've got it shooting 3" high at 100 yards that should put me at a 265 yard zero. This rifle is awesome and I wouldn't hesitate to hunt with it tomorrow.
Best of luck with yours, the work is fairly rudimentary but if you're uncomfortable take it to a gunsmith. (Hopefully yours has the adjustable trigger, makes it easy to make lighter if that's what you like.)

Yes it's wood. What is the best to seal up the wood if I decide to clearance it a bit?

EDVLC7 I use tung oil or some kind of oil for work such as that, but someone else here may have a better idea than that.
But I have never had any issues with using tung oil.

If you run a crisp dollar Bill around the barrel you can figure out if it is touching and where , then sand it a bit until you have the clearance...you can use Tru-oil, Tol oil , Linseed oil,or even a little furniture polish since it is under the barrel.
as was pointed out above , make sure your action screws are tight and Use the proper Gunsmith type Screwdriver so you dont bugger up the screw slots !
Keep us posted !

Ouch! Age must be moving up on me faster and faster all the time. If a Model 70 from '01 is "older", the pre-64's must be antiques. Where does that leave my Model 12 from the mid-50's? Is it too old to shoot?

I picked up a early 2000's M70 featherweight in 30-06. The floorplate is loose at the release button and I can't figure a way to tighten it. It's not so loose that it opens on it's own or rattles. I just bugs me. Any thoughts on how to tighten it? Thanks.

ABSOLUTELY too old! Black powder only through that mid-50's Damascus barrel.

You need to send it to me to ensure nobody is ever harmed by such an old piece.

Hey chester is the floorplate aluminum or is it steel. I have the exact same rifle myself. Although mine was made around 96-98 I believe. If yours is steel I will take mine off and examine it.
By the way I just got a load that is wicked accurate in this rifle. PM me if you reload and I will give it to you.
