I have a 223 and two 308s, all DPMS. Like them. The 223 is the more practical for potential self-defense use. The 308 will hunt or hit way far out. I was at the range shooting 600 yards today. Easy with the 308s.
The 223 is much lighter, depending on barrels. A 16" 223 is downright light, the 20" is very trim, and the 308 in 18" bull barrel is heavy. I add about 3# in the buttstock for recoil control and sight picture retention. The 18" DPMS 308 is about 14# and the 24" with bipod is almost 18#.
I like 223 and 308 calibers because they are common, well documented, and inexpensive. At a match, I can always count on someone else using them...
