New to the forum . So bear with me. Just picked up a Saginaw SG carbine from a estate sale. The stock is well worn and haven't had a chance to take it in for gauging the barrel etc. I need help on knowing what I have and what its worth. (got that crystal ball?) . The receiver serial number is 337xxxx, the barrel is a Saginaw SG General. It is stamped SG inside except the trigger group has a inland stamp on it. Of course , being a estate sale noone knew the history. I paid $500 for it. BTW the metal parts have the bluing worn and some surface rust on the barrel but no pitting. I can't find any markings on the stock. Like I said it is well worn. Was thinking about putting a synthetic on it( keep the old of course) and use it for a camp/truck gun. Any thoughts. Thanks in advance .Jon
CMP was selling the Saginaw SG for $595 - $695 so you could add about $100 to give you a good ball park figure. At $500 you made a fair buy based on the condition of the metal as you describe. Keep in mind, this is pretty well sought after make so take care of it.
BTW...Welcome to the forum.

Thanks for that. Just pulled it out and noticed there is no date stamp on the barrel. Just the previously mentioned Saginaw SG General Motors. I am to assume this is the original barrel? Or am I just not seeing a date.? And any problem in me refininshing the stock? Thanks Jon
If the reciever says Inland on it it is an Inland rifle. Inland used lots of different manufacturers for its barrels. Or it could be an arsenal rework. They did not care what parts went together. Does it have a bayo lug on the barrel? Does it have a flip sight a forged sight or a stamped rear sight? Does it have a flip or a push button safety switch? Look in the sting slot and see if there are any letters there.
This will give a better idea of the value. Pic as usual would allow us to give you a much better idea of the value of your historic rifle.

I have an Inland that is stamped S'G and was told they are rare as they were Made for Inland to meet production demands until they got fully operational...

Right. He needs to be more specific of what is stamped that on the reciever. If it has an SG barrel on an Inland reciever or if it has an Inland SG reciever.
This is whats fun about M1 Carbines. All the different variations you can have.

Boy , your not kidding. Once again I really appreciate the feedback and let me give this another try now that I have "options". The receiver is marked Saginaw SG ( not S'G'.) It does have a bayonet lug. It has a toggle safety. The barrel also has in real small lettering " ARD ORD Arliington VA). Not sure about the rear sight. It is adjustable with a turn knob on the right side and does seem to want to flip up. It is set in a keyway , much like on a pistlo or semi- auto. The only part that says Inland is the trigger group housing . The rear butt plate has no identifier, and the stock has no identifier ,in or out. Don't know what a sting slot is and haven't mastered pics yet. How do I post pictures.? Thanks again. Also picked up a Blue Sky Garand but I will save that for the other forum.

Your carbine appears to be a Korea Lend-Lease return that was "imported" during the 1990's and most likely has been rebuilt, as most carbines are. It does not reduce the value except for perhaps a spit'n'polish collector.
Not all barrels have a date stamp by the manufacturer which does make it a litle harder to determine age. Don't spend a lot of time over the markings. You state you bought it for a shooter; so enjoy the miniature beast...lol

Copy that. Just curious though what makes you think it was imported back in the 90's ?. I hope I didn't mislead with the Blue Sky comment. That is actually a Garand Rifle I have also. I don't see any sign of import on the carbine. But as for a shooter. your probably right. Ramline makes a nice synthetic stock for $50. I'll put it right next to the AR's. Whats interesting also is I have a Miltech refurbished Winchester Carbine that is beautiful. Took it apart and can't find any markings whats so ever except for Winchester on the receiver and a W on the barrel . But it is a gorgeous gun. thanks for the help. Jon
The serial number is Saginaw, not Inland! And Saginaw barrels were never dated. Some SG carbines did have the SG on the side of the receiver. Whether or not you should refinish the stock depends on the stock. If it is an M1 stock, we need to see it to determine that. If it is an M2 stock, go right ahead.

I wish my stock looked that good. Mine looks like someone used it for a fence post. I will dig it out today and check the slot. Thanks again for all the help. Any quick lessons on how to post pics. ? The teenager moved out, so I am now happier but definately computer illiterate.
The best pics are taken outdoors. I use a little lithium greese to bring out the metal markings. There is a sticky about how to post pics somewhere. I usually post them to my profile photo folder. Then just open another window with another G&G in it find the pic and copy and paste it. You can just copy from your computer as well but then you only have thumbnail pics.

Your comment on Arlington is what makes me believe it is from the 90's. I purchased several during 93 - 95; some were marked Bluesky an the barrel and a couple were from Arlington Armory.
Pure speculation on my part.
MilTech, as well as Fulton Armory, replace alot of parts during their refurbish and I don't think they mark them with anything. Both do fabulous work if ou want a totally refurbished carbine.
