Question 7/8" tube magnum rifle scope?

My father-in-law owns a sporterized 98 mauser in .270. It has a Lyman 2X Alaskan Guide scope (I think). Anyway, this scope has a 7/8" tube. The scope mounts are dovetailed sideways into the top frame of mauser, so I don't think I want to mess with those, could become expensive quickly.
I guess my question(s) would be:
1) Is there a decent scope available with a 7/8" tube
2) Will rimfire scopes be able to handle the recoil of a .270
3) Does anyone know of 1" tube scope mount for this rifle
The Lyman scope is adequate for heavy timber, but he has moved to the open prairies of Wyoming and would like a variable power scope that can handle 400 yard shots.
Thanks for your input!

There are no 7/8" scopes being manf. presently to my knowledge. I believe Leupold did a run of repo-Alaskans, but that was around 20 years ago, haven't seen any lately. The description you gave of the mount being dovetailed into the receiver sounds like a post war German or Austrian conversion. It poses a problem as it would be difficult and quite expensive to change to something different.

The Lyman 2X Alaskan brings a good price on the used market. Just buy a new mount and scope.

Hey Jangle1965
I got a vintage Weaver 3x9 V22-A scope that is 7/8" dia tube at an auction, I checked on Ebay and found a couple there in the 20/30 dollar range. I really like the Weaver scopes I had as a young "man" back in the 60's, I wish I still had them and the guns too :+) I hope this helps...can't wait to mount mine on a Winchester Model 74 .22 auto. Good luck...
