If my memory serves me right the owner of Bark River knifes was a VP of Marbles knifes and he left to start his own company when they went to China. As for American steel I have no trouble getting good quality steel for the knifes I make. The price I pay for supples lets me build a Damascus stag handled Bowie knife that sells for under 200.00. Check out the gun shows for the knife makers not just knife sellers.

Just my 3 cents: 1--we have our own Steve Bowers here at G&G, and I would welcome his comments on the current situation of overseas manufacturers in the knife world as well as to find out the worth of materials used by home-grown knife makers. 2--the last Winchester knives I would buy were from the late 80's through I think '98 stag handled knives made by Blue Grass Cutlery in Mansfield Ohio. Winchester's quality has not been the same since. 3--northwestern PA has some excellent knife manufacturers in CASE, Queen, etc., although some of these as other posts indicated now function under different names. bgodlesky has good posts ^ on this.

As far as I know, Bluegrass Cutlery has a backroom where they package knives. No production . Pay them a visit and ask to see their shop.
The Winchesters from late 80's were made by Queen. All the Win stuff now is offshore production.
Mike Stewart run Marbles before starting up Bark River. Before that he had a hand in the Blackjack factory, which made really great Randall clones, among other knives.
We still make some pretty good steel here in this country. As a maker I see no reason atall to be buying foreign steel.
As for "salvage " steel, I have 600-700 pounds of different steel here, all spectrographed. I know what I have. That includes the piles of cable. Do I have a "name" for it all?? No, but I do have a chemical analysis. bruce

(BOG) Mostly sawmill blades, hexstock, and rolls of spring steel I get from a scrap guy, Romey.
Also have 300-400 pounds of structural cable(pre-stressed concrete stuff) that the company gave me a spec sheet for. Pays to make up blacksmith knives and give them as gifts. many many returns.

I find it interesting that the posts on this BB that go in the general direction of "made in America" have a tendency to get a lot of replies.
I was thinking about this because I was in Bass Pro in Springfield MO yesterday and picked up a new knife for myself. I chose a Benchmade (my first choice) and as I waffled between two models available I checked the "country of origin" and chose the one from U.S..
I guess I'm of the same mindset as most folks on this BB and as more seems to go wrong in this country because of political anarchy the more I turn to what I feel is patriotism to the greatest country in the world.
