The University of Arizona might as well be posting signs that read: "Pyscho's All You Can Kill Buffet. No Bag Limit, No Waiting, No Risk."
Unless you can lay your hands on it when the looneytune bursts into the classroom and starts shooting, a gun does you no good at all. Lawyers for the State of Arizona need to look the law over carefully and TELL the University that their campus is state property, not private property the way, say, Harvard or Yale or other private colleges are. The University does not get the final say on the rules regarding firearms; the State does.
It also needs to be pointed out to the University by the State and outfits like the NRA, GOA and the CCRKBA that it's not as if the state is suggesting that every freshman enrolling on campus be issued a pistol along with his or her class schedule. You have to have a clean record and be 21 or older to obtain one; and I think Arizona is one of the states that requires training before issuing a CCW. As a class, pistol permit holders are among the most law-abiding people in the country. That also needs to be emphasized to them.
Every school shooting I have ever heard of, both secondary and collegiate, would not have been massacres if there had been CCW holders present trained and able to use their pistols. The lunatics still would have been able to shoot one or two but not more before being put down by CCW holders. That's the real bottom line. If necessary, have the University run a test supervised by people from Gunsite or Thunder Ranch with actual, trained CCW holders in their ordinary clothes, not the blatantly rigged outfits ABC made the students with no training wear for their propaganda piece on 20/20 awhile back. I think that would be all the proof they need - especially if the instructors take the CCW holders off to the range for a week and train 'em hard first. (I'm not above using a little subterfuge to make the point I want to make. If the newsies can cheat, so can we!)
The final thing the University should do if real CCW carry goes into effect on their campus is posts signs at the gates: "Warning. Our students carry concealed on this campus, and they know how to shoot. Draw down on them at your own risk." I think that would cause any suicidal psycho wanting to go out in a blaze of gory to find some other location to commit his atrocity.
