I've just purchased a Savage 99c. Been searching all sites to determine the year. I noticed on this site that "Mad Dog" had an almost instant answer to everyone who asked. I was hoping he may still frequent this site or someone as generous with this information might help me out. SN 10898xx My 99c is the newer version with the removable clip. All the charts I've found only list the pre-mil category. Thank you to any one who might offer help.
Doug Murray's book "The Ninety-Nine states the 99c clip magazine rifle was introduced in 1965 and discontinued in 1985. If you let me know what caliber the gun is and what type of buttplate it has, it might help narrow it down. In 1980 the forearm had finger grooves and in 1981 it had a Monte Carlo stock with a recoil pad. There are many little differences in this model throughout the years. Mind you that pretty much goes for every model 99 made. I'm sure Mad Dog or 99trix will nail it down for you.
Thanks Hoover99. Rifle is a 308. It is not the monte carlo stock, and does not have the finger grooves either. Just checkering. The buttplate is shotgun type with lateral grooves between the two screws cut about 1/16 of an inch apart, and from the top to the bottom they are 2 3/8" down the buttplate. Below and left of the stamped "Savage Model 99c" is the letter "J" There is a small oval with SR, or SA, or S9, or S something. Has a gold trigger if that means anything.
I'm new to the savage 99 world so bare with me, what does the barrel address say? That might narrow it down. MadDog or 99trix, any ideas? According to the book the early models were not stamped with the model designation [99c]. So I'm thinking yours is post 1975.
Ok, so here's what I've got so far on finding the year. Savage 99c, 308, Sn 10898xx, Westfield Mass., detachable clip, Monte Carlo stock, checkered, without recoil pad. (has curved metal plate with lateral grooves between the two screws (I think is called shotgun buttplate.) Also appears to have factory sling posts.
Date of manufacture is 1965, pictures would be great. Is the checkering cut or pressed? The monte carlo stocks of that era were only offered on the 99DL and the engraved models (PE & DE). All were rotary mag and not removable magazines. Sounds like the wood has been swapped out. It should have regular wood, varnish finish and pressed checker without any swivels.
You must be a wizard of some sorts. You are correct about the stock. It is not a monte carlo stock. I screwed up in my later post. The guy that sold it to me first said it was 20-30 years old. Then he said it was newer. I'm very happy to know the real year. Thank you very much 99trix. Maybe the next time I will know enough about my savage to make better sense. I appreciate the time you took to help me out. Thanks
Not sure I know enough to say if the checkering is pressed or cut without having the gun here to look at. I'm in the office. Will try to do better and send a picture when I can.
Pressed checkering. There were a few different styles. You can see that it is rounded and not sharp like when cut with a hand tool. Your stock set should be very similar to this one.
Here is an example of the cut checkering. Sharp with points on the checkering.
I never get tired of looking at this one. It was made in 1914 and is in mint condition as you can tell by the checkering, finish and case colours on the lever. This is one of my favourites in my collection.
You are correct again. My stock is exactly like the one pictured above. Sincere thank you for taking the time to help. Having a hard time getting a picture. Wife is divorcing me after 30 years and she has my digital camera. Will probably get my savage too from the horor stories I've heard. Thanks again
Best of luck bud! I have always been told when one door closes a new one opens! So look forward to your new adventures, close the previous door properly and you are still on the right side of the ground!
Thank you. Hoping I get to that point soon. It's a weird situation to be in, and way boring to the rest of the world. So I will keep to gunandgame in the future like I should have in the first place. Will probably get many "Amens" out of that. Thanks again for the help on the Savage 99c
