It's really simple... use whatever's cheapest and does the job well for what you want.

There are some basic needs that need to be met:
  1. Remove production grease/oils.
  2. Remove production/transportation 'gunk' or shavings.
  3. Apply a corrosion protection product.
If you get those done, you're golden. You'll need one of the many solvents mentioned for #1 and will help with #2, but a brush and elbow grease are also needed. For #3, any type of gun oil is going to keep your investment protected, just some better than others.

I've used both Hoppe's No. 9 and Rem Oil (currently), but from online tests/reviews that I've seen it looks like the best corrosion protectant out there might be Eezox. It resisted corrosion from salt spray better than any other tested.

I keep meaning to buy some of that stuff, but not until I used up this spray bottle of Rem Oil.

put some castrol full synthetic motor oil in a little bottle one quart will last forever . i used some one time and it seemed to work really well.it doesn't breakdown like other oils do with heat and it's 100times more slicker meaningless wear on rubbing parts.

The nice thing about Carb. Cleaner is that it comes with that little red straw that you can put on the end of the spray nozzle. This will allow you to REALLY spray out the gunk in some of the smallest nooks and crannies, with the greatest of ease. However Carb Cleaner will definately mess up the finish of the wood too, so be mindful of that. Best of luck.
