What complete lines of BS have you heard about C and R?
I was doing paperwork a couple weeks ago on a non-C and R rifle (1965 Remington BDL700) and was shooting the bull with the FFL dealer. When I mentioned that had a C and R license, he immediately piped up saying that he didn't accept them..
I politely asked why not.. I respect his decision, but I was intersested in why he wouldn't take them..
What he told me made me laugh, and I think it embarassed him..
He said he wasn't aware of what was and wasn't eligible. He said "the book's not even put out by BATFE"... He also said that he'd once been on the phone for over an hour trying to get an answer on if a gun was C and R, and ended up speaking with "the boss of the Chicago branch" who told him that the only guns that were C and R eligible were old guns that there wasn't any commercial ammo available for anymore..
I told him that even though he might have been talking to someone that should be up on the rules, the person didn't have a clue.. Either that, or J & G, SOG, AIM, Centerfire System, and everyone else was breaking the rules on a hourly basis, as all the Mausers, SKS's, Mosin Nagants, CZ52 and 82's and a hodge podge of other odds and ends that I've bought over the years were done so completely against BATFE rules.
Anyway, what have you guys run up against as far as people not having a clue about the rules of the C and R license??
since having a c&r here in cali doesn't do any good anyway. not much. still have to do a background check and wait ten days to get the rifles or handguns.
there was one time it helped when i bought my k-31. i told them about the c&r just for fun and the counter guy went to the owner who was unclear about the rules and let me walk out with the rifle. they said if the background check went afoul they'd call me. LOL! does that make any sense to you?
perhaps those who's c&r actually helps with in-state purchases should take along a copy of the rules. they aren't hard to read or figure out. real easy to convince the store owner to see it your way with the paperwork in hand!

I have found, like you,a lot of gun shops,if they don't sell a lot of C&R classified weapons haven't got a clue. Most don't like C&R licensed folks because they think we're some sort of threat because we can usually buy at the same price they do.The worst problem I have personally run into is with the pre-64 Winchesters, which are all considered C&R.From my experience most shops aren't conversant with C&R regs and rules.
Most Gun Shops are uneasy dealing with C&R's only because they have not dealt with them much. Most don't know the regs, and don't want to get in trouble with the BATFE.
I lost out on a rifle I wanted to bid on (a Mosin Sesty) because the owner said he would only ship to a Gun Shop. I sent him my C&R and asked him to please call his local BATFE to inquire. He would not.

is that what it said in his add? only to a gun shop or did you ask him before you bid? i would have been tepted to bid anyway and squared him away after if he wanted to complete the sale. it's not rocket science. it only take a couple minutes to read and understand the c&r rules. we should probably all carry a copy with our c&r when heading to the gun stores shows.

I have found most of the people set up at shows, most not all,are pretty familiar with C&R regulations. Most of the shops are not.Right now from talking to some of the dealers the ATFE is really out in force inspecting records.Remember also,it is their shop to run as they see fit,a lot of them are afraid of getting in trouble or their license revoked. You won't make any friends trying to shove a regulations book in there face.It just sometimes takes a little time and friendly persuasion to get them familiarized with what a C&R covers as far as guns and the license.
if i find the one i'm looking for on auction, i'm not even gonna ask. just win it and send him my c&r and take it from there. if it doesn't say no sales to cali i'm good. let the seller worry about it. if he doesn't want to sell to a c&r holdern he should have said so in the auction. what's the worst that can happen? i win and he refuses to follow through with the transaction? he'd be the only one out anything.

Biggest BS I have heard is from people who think that getting a C&R means someday the Feds are going to be crashing through your door.
Exactly!!
While I did get inspected, I was given the opportunity to set up the appointment for when it was convienent for me. And the agent told me that I should have also bought a lottery ticket, as the odds of being inspected were extremely rare..
In retrospect, the inspection only verified that I was doing things correctly and I got some direct answers from someone who was qualified to give them.
Don't believe for a minute that the BATFE agent that audited you knows what he is talking about !! One of my local agents asked me where I got my 3 part list of C&R Guns. When I told him the BATFE website, he had nothing to say !!
If you get a notification of an audit, run here, and there are MANY guys that can talk you through step by step !!

Yep!! Passed an audit and learned a great deal in the process.. I also have to admit that my auditing agent was able to admit a mistake on his part, in grace, and also give me a ton of info that I was unaware of..
Not that I'd call him a "friend", but I've called him with a couple more questions since my audit.. He's always anwsered me with quick replies, and info to back up his answers. That's all I can ask.
