22 mag/22 LR

I've had a new shooter ask me why you can't shoot 22 lr in a 22 mag cylinder of a Single-Six...and why you can't shoot a 22 lr in a 22 mag bolt action rilfe...I thought I'd ask my fellow participants on this sight to share their insights on this thoughtful question.
Thanks to all.

Ruger paid engineers to safely and properly specify and manufacture chambers for fit function and safety. Never fire a type of ammunition in a firearm that is not designed for it.

Besides what Jerry said the case on a 22 magnum is wider than a 22lr. I've never tried, but a 22lr in a 22mag chamber could also cause case failure.

I'm tempted to do it just for posterities sake...but I don't wanna screw up a Marlin 25MN rifle that shoots teensy lil groups

I guess next time I borrow a Savage I'll make a lil U-Tube movie

When I ws a young & dumb kid, a friend and I used to shoot .22 lr s out of his father's .22 mag High Standard derringer. never had a safty problem but the cases split and sometimes were hard to extract. his father found out about it and gave us a "talking to" and we never did it again. it can be done but it is not the right thing to do. accuracy probably would suffer too. but that was not a problem with a derringer cause they don't have any to start with.
