This was my first ever Savage purchase. A friend of mine is buying an oven and needed some money and was lookin to sell his savage 116 weather warrior stainless steel 30-06 bolt action rifle. he wanted $525 for it which is a great deal considering it came with 34 rounds of remington 150 grain FMJ ammo on an ammo belt, 20 rounds of federal 180 grain soft point ammo, a bushnell 4-12x40 sportsman(mounted and close to zeroed), a sling, and a $40 bipod. Excellent deal! so i shot it at my range before buying it to see if i definitly wanted it(id never shot a 30-06 before and didnt know if the recoil would be too much). first shot was about 3" to the left and just a tad low. 2nd shot was right next to it but closer to the bullseye. third shot was right next to that one. it ended up being a 3/4" group. this was only at 25 yards as i didnt want to start shooting it without knowing if it was zeroed or not past 25 yards. im confident it would still group great way beyond 25 yards though. the recoil was much less than what i had expected. i was shooting it with my father and when he took the bench and took a shot...man does that thing have a shock wave to it. it was like the hairs on my face all stood up when the cartridge went off. so i took a shot at my 175 yard swinging steel target and hit it. tried it another time and hit it again. this is easily my new farovite gun. thank you savage!
so i have two questions.
1) will the 180 grain federal ammo kick a whole lot more than the 150 grain remingtons?
2) when you only load 1 cartridge into the internal magazine and try to close the bolt, the cartridge pops up and wont feed straight into the chamber. the only way to get it to feed is to close the bolt really fast. its only on that round though. the 2nd 3rd and 4th all feed perfectly. why is this?

Congrats on the new gun, I know you'll be very happy with it for many years. Without being rude, I'd suggest scrapping the scope and put a Nikon Prostaff, Sightron SII, Bushnell 3200, etc. (or better, if funds allow) on it and it will make one heck of a deer gun. The reason I say this is, I've personally seen three different Bushnell Sportsman scopes on three different guns, shoot the reticle loose. I'm not sure about the feeding problem, maybe the follower is hanging up at the top of the mag?

well i figure that once i start havin problems with the scope then i'll replace it. i cant hunt with rifle calibers in indiana so its just a target/plinking fun gun.

come on guys i need an answer to the feeding problem

I too just bought a Savage, the Weather Warrior 308 SS package. Got 5 rounds through it. Close the 100 yard bullseye. Will try again later.
It's not a target shooter with such a skinny barrel. Have to sight it in on a Cold Barrel. When that barrel heats up the groups will start walking. Based on #1 son's Savage 308.
The stock is touching the barrel.

Savage makes a good barrel. I have a Sightron II, once on a 7mm WSM and now an AR. Holds zero.
A Mildot Prostaff does great on my friends 45-70. But just get the one you have zeroed, it may be a good one. With the 30-06 shock wave, only sturdy scopes will hang.

well ive got a bushnell sportsman 4-12x40 AO $100 or so scope on it right now and ive gotten 7/8" groups at 75 yards with my handloads with it so it seems to be a good scope for now. and youre not kiddin! the shockwave of this thing is.....impressive. my dad and i took turns shooting it. i took the first shot and it was the first time either of us had shot a 30-06 and i had expected much worse recoil. i took a few shots then he took the bench. i stood right next to him and just about jumped as the hairs on every inch of my body stood on end from that shockwave...lol it was actually pretty funny. a month or so later i shot my mosin for the first time since i got that 30-06 and it feels like nothing compared to that thing!

i havent been able to shoot the savage for a while because my local gunshop doesnt have the powder i make my handloads with..IMR 4895. guy said its been out of stock all year.
