Thats the way to look at it Dms,do what fits your circumstances.I remember once I didn't have anything really but a family that kept me broke and working (shudder)and got ahold of a 7mm Mauser with (I think a 29 1/2" barrel,original.(whatever that was).I unloaded mil/spec brass and used my own powder and bullets and got it down to a 1 1/2" group at 300yds.It didn't cost much but I was busy and very proud of the outcome.Altho a good bolt rifle cost between $100.and $200. I couldn't afford it. ,,,sam.

When you can buy a BRAND NEW Marlin for $300 chambered for numerous cartridges that are quite capable out to 500yds, I see little reason to bother with a Russian club.

I too believe Mosins make better boat anchors than hunting or long range weapons.

And for the record I like Mosins because they are a cheap way to get into
the sport, there are some really good rifles out there but most are very crude.
Like Dms said we have much better choices than a mosin for any situation
and for not much more money.

$290 at almost any Walmart gets you a Marlin XL7 or XS7 from .30-06 caliber down to deer minimum .243

They even have Youth models

And when you read the reviews...you find that everyone is shocked that an inexpensive rifle can shoot sub-moa, has an adjustable trigger, recoil pad & all the other nifty extras on it

It's a whole new world of Rifles...Marlin's leading the way with the best deer rifle to come out in the last 50 years!!

i'll have to take a look at the new marlins. i need a modern rifle. can't keep swinging this 75 year old mosin club forever!
to be honest, it shoots 2" groups @100 and i'd really like to get a cheap rifle that shoots less than an inch if possible.
i'm just wondering how much of that 2" is my fault and not the rifle's? guess i won't know till i go modern.

hemi brought up a great point about the mosins being a great place to get started. $69.95 piece of history that makes a VERY loud bang and if you're lucky shoots as well as you do. after a while you get to wondering just how good you are and if the rifle is the limiting factor.

It's easy to measure one to see how much they bend with a given force at right angles to their bolt axis. Most folks are surprised at the difference; I sure was when I measured them. Harold Vaughn had some data on this in one of his books.

The only articles I find on stiffer actions that say Win.may have an advantage are first,the controlled feed supports the cartridge better which is quickly contradicted by the full head support of a push feed,backed up by the fact that Winchester push feeds are more accurate than Winchester controlled feed.And #2,the fact that a claw extractor is more dependable than a small extractor in a push feed which is debunked by the fact that machineguns use push feed extractions and this would not be if there were an extraction problem with them.As to stiffness of action,I could only find one person,not an expert that had the opinion tne Win.action was stiffer.Virtually all others believed that it was a tossup between the two actions and one stated that you never saw Win.actions in the competition lineup.(I dissagree there,I have seen both but Rem.was more popular.)I love the Win.action.I believe it will handle more dirt and the controlled feed is a little smoother than a Rem.700 action.But the Rem. has the advantage of being about 1 1/2 lbs lighter in most setups.I am not getting into which is best or worst as you can put Win. M70 vs Rem. M700 on your search and go through a lot of facts and opinions/personal experience,and make your own decision,s. ,,,sam.
