Just got a call from the NRA

First time they've ever called me. However, I'm not giving them anything just yet. I asked what percentage of what is sent in actually goes to fighting the bills they say they do and what percentage goes to other things such as advertising and the guy wasn't able to find the info. I'm not comfortable giving anyone money unless I know most if not all of it goes directly to what it's supposed to be doing. I know some people here are members of the NRA and some have been but aren't now so I figure I can get a good answer. Does anyone know what percentage does go to advertisements and all their "freebies"?

My opinion is that the NRA spends too much money on salaries for them ole boys like Chris Cox and others like him. But, I do believe that if not for the NRA that gun control would be alot worse than it is. It's your money so do what you want. But my opinion is that if you're not a member and gun control gets worse in your state then you've got no right to complain. The NRA ain't the best thing ever but it's all we got!

I can't give you percentages, but I do think that we have more gun rights because of their efforts, which is why I am a member. All the numbers become a blur when the sum of the game equals more rights.

I totally agree with you LR, BUT when they insist on calling me at 7:00 PM or later (especially on weekend nights) when I'm trying to spend time with my family it kind of pis... uh, makes me mad.

The call I got was about 8 p.m. Surprised me. I might consider donating....I've just heard they send a bunch of junk mail(one reason why I'm curious about the funds) and I don't like junk mail.

Lng Rgr has it right. If the NRA quit tomorrow, the landscape would be altered in four short years. Once these rights are taken away, it is unlikely they would ever be reclaimed. They do spend a lot on salaries, but remember, these are high performance people. They argue in front of unfriendly judges all year. THEY are the ones who flex our collective muscle.
If you don't value your right to own a firearm, for hunting, protecting your loved ones and yourself, or just for recreation, then you probably won't get to excited about the NRA. If you do value those things, then realize that they are our strongest arm of the fight. I have asked them not to call me after 7:00 pm. It took a while, but they no longer do. If someone just wants a reason to not belong.....one is as good as another. It is purely a choice.

If the NRA quit tomorrow, I think the Dems. would alter it before 2010!

Nra

Been member for many years. Recently they sent me DVDs on self defense, of which I had not ordered. I sent them back with letter adiving I was retired LEO, I didn't need them and not to send anymore. Guess what? Another in the mail. Sent it back. If they keep sending them, maybe I'll just keep them and not pay the postage. Legally they can't charge you for something you didn't order, right?

^See that's one of those things that doesn't make sense to me. If they shouldn't be spending the money on things such as DVDs and junk mail. If all I got was a sticker I'd be happier than if they send me a bunch stuff I don't need nor want.

The NRA divisions are rather byzantine (main NRA, NRA-ILA, NRA Foundation etc.), so I don't know if this is accurate, but here's a summary. Sending it to the main NRA might provide a different experience.

The NRA is the biggest .
www.nra.com

The Second Amendment Foundation is the most effective , member for for member and dollar for dollar. Check out the lawsuits.
www.saf.org

The two make a great team.

United we stand.
The NRA is a 400 pound gorilla on capitol hill. I wish he were a 1,200 pound gorilla. evey single person can help, and it will make a difference.

Thanks for that! That helps a lot. That's not so bad then. I might just send them some money.

I am thankful for the NRA and all the hard work that they put into defending our 2 nd. Amendment Rights. They also have training courses for shooters. Losts of good stuff.
I not only belong to the NRA but also the GOA & BFA.
However, I do question how well they manage the dollars sent to them. After all, it's free money. Lots of activities other than Lobbying our Rights. Correct me if I'm wrong but don't they own a large ranch in New Mexico?? or somewhere?? Isn't it equiped with numerous shooting ranges and places to hunt?? Also I watch The Outdoor Channel and they have commerials on there all the time. Even sponser their own show.
I guess the only thing that I object to the "made in China" junk that they send out from time to time but that's just me. I don't mind the phone calls. I can always say OK or no thanks.
I don't mean to speak ill of them but one does wonder. I plan on continuing to support them but I feel better about the GOA & BFA, they just Lobby.
After all, If 10% of the members of this forum sent me 5% of their income, would I value it enough to spend it wisely??

I'm an NRA member, and the one thing that I don't like is the junk mail that I get from them. I've never gotten a phone call though. I echo what's already been said. What they do in representing us is worth the hassle of a bit of junk mail.

The only mail I get from the NRA is them asking for money and the occasional entry for a gun give-a-way. A gun give-a-way contest similar to others I've gotten and where I've yet to find out who the winner/s of the other gun give-a-ways I've received? Even after both calling and emailing asking who the winner/s were. Also never found out if the winners were posted online anywhere either?

So, speaking of these contests, anyone ever see a list of who the winners were?

I wish they would opt us out of the junk snail mail, it goes right in the shredder. It would save so much money to add to the fight...

Still, I will continue to support.

PS: I get calls every once in a while, usually by some minimum wage telemarketer that knows nothing about guns and gun rights and may even oppose them for all I know.
