Pelosi says value added tax is on the table

What happened to no new taxes on those making under 250,000. How much you want to bet that they will throw in a gun and ammo tax as well.

A new value-added tax (VAT) is "on the table" to help the U.S. address its fiscal liabilities, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Monday night.

Pelosi, appearing on PBS's "The Charlie Rose Show" asserted that "it's fair to look at" the VAT as part of an overhaul of the nation's tax code.

"I would say, Put everything on the table and subject it to the scrutiny that it deserves," Pelosi told Rose when asked if the VAT has any appeal to her.

The VAT is a tax on manufacturers at each stage of production on the amount of value an additional producer adds to a product.

Pelosi argued that the VAT would level the playing field between U.S. and foreign manufacturers, the latter of which do not have pension and healthcare costs included in the price of their goods because their governments provide those services, financed by similar taxes.

Just what this country needs; another increase in the cost of manufacturing, when American made goods can not compete on a price basis now.

I'm telling you, these comugress critters are hell-bent on destroying the USofA.

I guess I'm dumb but I don't see how taxing our struggling manufacturers is going to level the playing field with foreign producers. Shouldn't we tax the imported goods to level the playing field??? Maybe I read the article wrong.

Maybe if the Democrats would quit spending us into bankruptcy they wouldn't need to raise taxes. If they'd just allow people to go across state lines, do tort reform, stop ins. companies from being able to not insure those with pre-existing conditions, and take care of all the fraud in Medicare, they wouldn't have to tax anything.

MY OPINION, Pelosi is a senile old hag.

Bring back manufacturing to America will level the playing fields more than some dumb tax. Ya gotta have jobs so people can work before they can pay taxes. Duh!

To do this they would need to make America more business friendly, and that ain't gonna happen.

We had better work to bring the Republicans back to power before the Democrats come up with any more insane ideas to expand the working poor class in the United States! We are rapidly heading toward the situation that existed in China at the turn of the 20th Century, where there were two classes of people - the rich, who owned everything, and the poor who worked for the rich and owned nothing.

You might recall they had a revolution. Inequitable distribution of wealth was a major causal factor.

Of course, I wouldn't expect Congress to learn from history.

A VAT tax is a dangerous thing. It can be endlessly expanded to cover almost anything they choose as time goes by.This was brought up in Congress years ago and it was a bad idea then and it's still a bad idea. The more money Congress has to spend the more they will spend.Endlessly raising taxes isn't going to solve fiscal mismanagement.

We will be in the EU if this keeps up. Everything is going according to world governance plans. If they were to do it according to the Constitution, they should be putting tariffs on foreign goods to level the playing field, not leveling the country.
Vote them out, or throw them out.

I posted a thread concerning our $11 trillion debt and got no feedback.
Perhaps this is the reason we are so screwed up,no apparent interest in the spending orgy.
Aw well,it don't matter.

I think it should just be a fixed percentage on everyones income. Like 15% or something and that is all we have to pay. None of these extra BS taxes.

+ a million right there. I'm sure when you look at it, there's less jobs now then there was BEFORE outsourcing started.

Nice post JimBob, and very true. It could and probably would be used to tax what manufacturing we still have in the United States out of existence. A VAT Tax is not the way to go.
If our esteemed law makers want to change the tax code, let them abolish the IRS and replace it with a National Sales Tax that everyone pays when they buy items they want or need. No loopholes for anyone. When merchandise is bought, the tax is paid by the buyer whether a person, business, or other enity.

It is also on the table

that the massive deficit course set by the Obama administration can
bring disaster to the politicians who must, at some time, come to grips with the level of federal taxation needed to feed this fiscal monster.

The middle class continues to lose ground.

It is not a great deal of additional taxation necessary to send millions of people over the financial edge and into the downward slide to the financial quagmire from which they cannot recover.

Pelosi and her fellow travellers should have thought about this when they passed the unbelievable spending bill early in the Obama adminsitration.

There are many of us who look at the millions of manufacturing jobs thus far sent overseas and realize we cannot export ourselves to national financial strength. The concept of a debt fueled service economy has pretty much hit the wall. The concept of increasing the U.S. population to provide jobs for U.S. citizens has pretty much hit the wall.
