Chuck Hawks' site is VERY informative. There's more to read there than you can muster in a few days.
Reloading Page

Once there, click on the "Tables, Charts, and Lists Page" found at the top of the page. You will have to register and sign in, but the RIFLE RECOIL TABLE alone is worth it.

If you cannot sign on or don;t want to, let me know and I can email the recoil page to you. It's 108kb. VERY interesting, this recoil table is.....

Good Post!

I got the Marlin 1895 GS and the Marlin 1895 XLR, both in .45-70, just for the Bear Hunting seasons. With good loads, there's nothing that's going to stand after being hit with one of those babies.

It's a heavy rifle, but I'd rather have too much gun than not enough gun.

What is a .600 Nitro Express Magnum?

Why not just build a .600 Overkill on a CZ 550 action?

CRF, readily available brass, and it's a belted straight wall case.

Big bore levers get my vote.

Is that action strong enough for the .600 NE?

That's what I was thinking too, that's just a low pressure shotgun action.

the savage 210 action is a scaled up replica of there standard rifle bolt, i consulted with our local gunsmith and he said it was a go, because the 600 nitro express is not a high pressure round due to it's large bore diameter.

Way too much gun for me, I think I'll stick with my CZ's for heavy duty hunting.

Not sure if I would want to use a Savage action for a DG rifle, anyway.

Ten Man.......You have perked my interest in those Marlin Rifles! So do you think the 45-70 would be good medicine for Grizzly?
By the way I doubt very seriously I will ever go to Africa. I do have a friend who is a missionary over there but there is no way Im taking a firearm over to his part of the world. Too many crazies where he is. lol

Yes, I'm too big a wuss, I'm gonna stick to shooting the .500 Jeffery and smaller cartridges like the .458 Lott and .450 Rigby, I'll let the real "He-man" shoot the big guns.

I know it can do it....but....I think I would like a heavier payload than whats offered for the 30-06.
Maybe I have eaten too much pizza and I'm in need of some sleep. lol
Any thoughts?

A good friend of mine worked for a few years with his cousin that ran an outfitter operation in Alaska. He carried a 300WM and said it was not enough for that part of the country. it was fine for the lower 48, but he felt undergunned in Alaska. His thought was the .338 was the minimum when hunting the huge Kodiak brown bears. (10ft + @ 1,000 Lbs. +) (his preference was the 375H&H)
one interesting note was they had a 45-70 hanging from a tree at night for camp security. he said it was quick, manuverable, and devestating at short range.

I do not know what others may think the minimum is for Africa may be but my guess is it's probably bigger than the .338.

I still kick myself for not picking up a Remington 338 Win Mag about a year ago at a gun show. The guy was selling it like dirt cheap....He was a smaller framed guy, like me, but I haven't had any problem with recoil...I think it was a sendero Mod 700. He was asking 550 for it. I think that was a descent deal. It had a great stock on it.

The area I hunt doesn't have any dangerous game...except for meth cookers and pot farmers...I think whatever I'm hunting with would be big enough for that kind of dangerous game.

I am just speculating, based on research and "paper" knowledge, (since I've never hunted DG)...but I would think .300WinMag for lower 48, .338 for alaska/canada, and .458 for africa. That is in bolt actions....I would trust a .450marlin in a lever for any DG on this continent up close.
