25-06 one shot kill

First time hunting with this rifle and didn't know exactly what to expect. I have heard good things about it as a deer rifle and I have been reloading Hornady 117 gr. with RL-22 powder. Very accurate at the range. Yesterday I dropped a nice black tail at about 200 yards. One shot kill, high shoulder shot. Dropped like a rock. I liked it because the recoil is light enough I was able to watch the whole thing in the scope. My magnum kicks enough that I am never able to see the results of my shot through the scope. I think the 25-06 is going to be my deer rifle now. Anyone else use this round? Tell me what you think of it.

I love my 25-06, it has all the attributes that you claim and many more. I have a load of 87 grain Remington Core-lokt bullets over IMR 4895 this is a real tack driver. Right now I am loading up some 100 grain Scirocco II bullets in front of IMR 4350. All of the deer shot with the 87 grain bullets were one shot kills and there was no running on the deer's part.

Well,

this cartridge does have a history of game hunting success.

For antelope hunters, a heavier target/varmit barrel really does fine tune the well known long range accuracy of this cartridge.

I am surprised the cartridge is not much more popular that it is but I suppose some people do not learn of it as is not something that regularly appears in gun magazines.

Excellent cartridge, I bought a standard issue Savage 110 about 3 years ago and it was a tackdriver. Let a friend use it to bag his first buck... He liked the performance so much now the gun is his!

The 25 06 is an excellent deer caliber. Nice going on your recent hunt.

I've often looked at the 25-06 as well as the 25 WSSM. One day I will own one. Ballistics seem ideal.

Hey tappedandtagged if you get a quarter bore get the 25-06, it handles the longer bullets a lot better than the WSSM counter part. Just a heads up

Thanks for the advice. Right now, I've bought two rifles in the past 3 weeks, so I think I'm done for a good while. I think I'm gonna save my coin and get a nice falling block action rifle. Don't know why I want one, I just do. I guess I have every other type of action, so now I need to complete it! That, and it's just a classic awesome rifle.

Tap I've got a Ruger No.1 in 25-06 with a 24" barrel and it's a sweet little rig. The No.1 is one of the prettiest rifle ever in my opinion. Finally got a load worked up that suits me and it and will be trying it out when rifle season starts.

Me too.... a Ruger #1V with a 26" heavy barrel. A nice little tack driver. The beauty of these #1 rifles (aside from their beauty ) is that a nice, long 26" barrel, and the overall length of the rifle is often shorter than a bolt action with a 22" or 24" barrel.

I like the cartridge best, though. It compliments my 30-06. My best results with 120gr Sierra GameKings is .4", 50.0 grains of RL22, a WLR primer, and an OAL of 3.145.

It seems that with all of the deer I have shot with the 25-06 , thay all seem to be blown off there feet, I am shooting 90 grain PSP's for now to burn up the rest of the factory fodder then I am switching to the 87 grain core-lokts until I get a load up for the 100 grain Sorocco II bullets... (I like to experiment with this gun if ya havn't noticed)

I bet some Hornady 110 gr. V Max bullets would make an excellent Deer cartridge in 25-06 if there made for 25-06.

I love my Sendero in 25-06. It has killed deer, Antelope, elk, coyote, rabbits, and prairie dogs. It's an extremely versatile caliber and accurate as well.

Hey AH, they do not make 110 grain V-Max bullets for the .257 bore but they do make 75 grain V-Max bullets which are really nice!

Anyone using 87gr and under in .257cal for deer is using a varmint bullet and taking a chance on bullet failure, especially at shorter ranges (under 200yds) where the velocity is high enough to disentigrate the bullet. There is no sense in this as you get longer range with heavier bullets and more energy down range and trajectory is almost the same. Some 1in10"twist have trouble with the 120gr bullets. Some mfg,s have a 1in9 1/8" twist that handles them just fine. All seem to handle 110/115gr,s fine.My favorite is still a hpbt,100gr bullet at 3200fps for anything from varmints to large deer. ,,,sam.

I have to agree with you, Sam. Mine is a Rem. Mod. 700. I haven't checked the twist but it doesn't shoot the lighter bullets as accurate. In all fairness though it doesn't shoot the Rem. Core Locked 120gr very accurate either. But it does like the Horn. 117. They make this a very sweet deer rifle for me.I will try the hpbt 100gr. first chance I get. Is that a Seirra bullet?

actually sam the 87 grain remington bullets I use do mushroom not explode, granted I do prefer heavier bullets for all of your reasons mentioned I just need to use them up and they are really accurate
