It's not unusual for employees to be fired for browsing pornographic Web sites at work. But a Pennsylvania gun owner named Tony Jackson may have been the first person ever fired for looking at Web sites featuring gun parts.
interesting that this was the reason give for the firing "Planco said its managers decided to fire Jackson, who has "an apparent fascination with guns," rather than "risk the potential safety of other Planco employees."
rather than just firing him for visiting gun sites while he was supposed to be working.

Funny that, cos that's the sort of thing that sometimes flips guys that are on the edge right over. You know, lost job, house, wife, family because of his interest in guns then takes his frustrations & anger out on his ex-bosses with his guns. Is there no redress for "unfair dismissal" in your country.

Obviously the employer is an anti-gun type that was probably looking for a reason to fire Mr. Jackson. Lacking a real or valid reason, the employer pulled this tripe out of a hat.
Under federal law, you are actually committing a felony offense known as "labor fraud" when you're being paid by your employer to perform work and you're doing something else...

Depends on your state laws. In "Right to Work" states, you have some recourse. In "Work at Will" states, you're pretty much hosed. That wouldn't fall under anything covered by federal anti-discrimination provisions.
Myself, I just stay off gun/knife/survival websites all together if on a work or school computer. Just safer for my privacy that way.
I've no option but to use a company computer. I'm on duty/call 24 hours a day for 28 days and can't get away from the job site. No other computer facilities available and no mobile phone coverage! Biggest hassle is the nanny firewall!

I read the rest of the article and apparently he did try and cite it as a cover for what he perceived as discrimination against him on a health matter. What I find absurd is he was visiting gun sites that had to do with firearm parts and the Mossberg site, and the coworker whom he apparently had a decent friendship with dimed him out saying she felt unsafe. Nice person there, smiles and offers you a hand as she stabs you in the back.
I just viewed the reader comments to the CBS article and they look about 9:1 in favor of the fired employee. In spite of a lower court ruling in favor of the company, he stands a good chance of a favorable ruling in the higher courts that won't be influenced by the corporate offices of general counsels who specialize in crafting and misinterpreting make believe laws against employees.

The motives for the firing seem trumped up. However, that being said, the Internet user was committing fraud by performing personal business on company time. I had a similar case to this a while ago, but not about guns or porn, and I first warned the fellow. On his second violation I began the firing process. We have to keep our priorities straight. In this case, there might be additional facts that we do not know because it seems silly to focus on gun/anti-gun sentiment as reasons for the dismissal. Bottom line: he was wrong.
