Took the Quads out today for a spin in the desert.

So the wife and I took the bikes out for a ride today, had a great time. we went to a dry lake bed about 20 min outside Las Vegas, near Jean NV. Wind picked up after noon so we split, as the dust was getting bad. But what a good time, peaceful, beautiful scenery. The lake bed has a lot of long flat terrain to go fast on, got up to about 60 and got nervous, my bike has a bit more power than I need, but I like it. Anyway, here are some pics...just thought I'd share a view of the day...click the pic to enlarge.

And of course...the "Captain Morgan" shot

Talking

Quads are a lot of fun. I'd love to give it a try on the lake flats around Nevada. The one I'm sitting on in the pic below got turned over when I failed to lean into the curve far enough.(ha)
I ended up with a completely torn rotator cuff and a separated right bicep tendon.

My brother and I also took out the quads today. But our riding is mostly in thick woods and mud. Not too many spots for 60 mph. We mostly hit 10-15 mph at most.

Must be nice to have real dirt that turns into mud, we don't have that here. So 10-15 mph, are your bikes manual shift or auto? My wifes bike is an auto, trailblazer 250, mine's a predator 500, and like most manual shift vehicles, it's not a big fan of staying in first gear. But I sure would love to ride in some real mud and dirt, the sandy rocky mix that is the deserts here get old, and not fun if it's all rocks, the lake bed was nice and flat, and there were a lot of trails that were gravel and sand, so not too rocky.

Ain't nothing like the open desert for riding in. I bought me a Polaris Sportsman 400 this week. That puppy is brand new and I have been breaking it in on the local trails around here. A mile either way and I am outa town. If I can get my digital camera back from my daughter I will get some pictures of a beautiful desert canyon that is nearby.

Might not be the ideal machine but it fit my pocketbook and fits in a 6.5ft bed.

A 4-wheeler ATV is a sportsmans dream come true. I have a Honda Foreman 400 that I take very good care of but I do go through Mud and Water when I have to and over small saplings and brush.
It don't hurt it at all and it always wants more. I have to shift mine.

Most brands seem to be well made and can take what you can dish out...A.H

Wow, this is crazy. I too, took out the 4-wheelers on Sunday! I'll be taking them over to my buddy's farm Weds, and was just checking them out to make sure they were ridable. We have 2 Polaris's, a 330 Trailboss, and a 330 Magnum.I ride mine like a big girl as my hips won't allow me to sit on them correctly. (side-saddle).

I ride an 05 suzuki vinson, and my brother has an 08 polaris sportsman. They are both automatic. Riding in the mess that we get into, a clutch would be too much of hassle. Way too many trees and rocks to go over. We have been up to the winches in mud, its much easier going in to the mess than getting out!

My Honda Foreman has no clutch, all you do is shift with your foot at any speed. It helps slow it down going down hill or speed shifting to get away from Big Foot !

I think I've been to that lake with my brother in his Dahaitzu rocky back in the '90s...not real positive but we went somewhere near there. We bummed all over back in the day in that rocky...it was small enough to go on most ATV trails.

I won't allow myself to own a 4-wheeler (ATV) beacuse I've almost killed myself a few times on them! LOL I had a lil 3-wheeler when I was young (like 5) and clotheslined myself on a bobwire fence...still have the scar. I've also rolled them and jumped stuff I shouldn't of...and ya'll get the picture! I think I'm evil knievel when I get on one.

Just a word of caution to all ya'll out there...a good friend of mine lost his grandaughter last Sun on a ATV. She was riding passenger with her older brother driving. They hit a bobwire fence and her jugular vein was cut. She was wearing a helmet and they were going a conservative speed...just be cautious out there guys!
