When I was a young man in college and the DE was a new thing my roomate was fascinated with the big gun.

Personaly, I preferred the old .44 automag.

Nothing would do him, but for me to take him to the gun shop when he turned 21 so he could get one.
I picked it up and pointed out that the controls were fairly difficult for me to reach and I have big hands. (I was shooting an N frame Smith back then with the oversize factory stocks).

He handled the thing and was devastated. It was Waaaay too big for his hands. The guy who ran the shop also explained that the gas action robbed a lot of velocity from the magnum rounds making them ballistically equivalent to snub nose revolvers in the same caliber.

Extra weight, extra heft, and its not as powerful as the same caliber gun half its size in a short barrel revolver.
He left the shop with a short barrelled Blackhawk in .45 caliber and a model 29 in .44 magnum instead.
I gotta admit, the big DE makes a great movie prop though.

I once owned 2 in .44 magnum. I sold the parkerized one and kept the chromed one.
Yes, they are very impractical, but are finely built and fitted. Nothing draws a crowd at the range like turning loose a magazine full with a D.E.
As noted, velocity is reduced to around 1250 fps. with 240 gr. bullets. I've chronograph compared my handloads fired from a 6" revolver, and the D.E. loses about 150 fps.

I wonder how well the .50AE version would work for door busting as a smaller compact breaching althernative to a shorty 12guage.

you and me both!
a friend of mine had a 44 Desert Eagle. every time I shot it I didn't want to give it back.

someday.....

that thing don't need to be practical. it's too bad a$$ for such a phrase.
