Well, there are many good books including several of the past and current reloading manuals, especially if you're interested in ballistics. Two that come to mind are the Speer and Lyman manuals-they both give a bit of background info on the round before giving the load data. Another excellent resource is Cartridges of The World, here's a link:

BTW, welcome to G&G!

1+ on Cartridges of the World

but if i might i would allso add ammo and ballistics 3 to that as well both great books full of great information. when i start to get a new gun, i first go to cartridges of the world then to the ammo and ballistics 3, the two will tell you almost anything you want to know about a spefic cartridge

Cartridges of the World is the long time standard and a good book for starters. It's almost impossible to find everything in one book though.A good book with cartridge dimensions and other info about cartridges old and new is The Handloaders Manual of Cartridge Conversions by Donnelly&Towsley.A good book on identifying military ammunition by headstamp markings up till about 1985 is this one Cornell Publications -Ammunition Identification Guide 1985 (DIA) <15mm Vol 1 LOL You'll find one book just won't do but CotW is a good basic starter book.

A recent book put out by bluebookinc.com is The Ammo Encyclopedia @$29.95 at 800 pages it's a little more in depth than CotW.

Toolman's and JimBob's recommendations are a great start to a fine book collection.
