I'm looking for a dead accurate decently inexpensive 223 bolt gun and figured the remington 700 is a perfect choice. the military uses it and ive heard amazing things about every one of them. so i need some info on what the best models are, the most inexpensive and if they are still as accurate as the more expensive ones, what the letters in the abbreviations mean, like BDL, stuff like that. just a good education on the remington 700.

ADl-Cheapest no drop plate i love mine.
SPS-(special purpose synthetic) same as ADL except it has a drop plate very good value.
BDL- (Basic Deluxe i think) A SPS with a blued finish and a wood stock getting pricey.
CDL-Classic Deluxe) The most Expensive but man are they beautiful.
all will shoot very nicely. also you have probably 20 other choices those are just the basic models.
I'd look at a Savage or Stevens personally, but then I had a bad experience with a 700 as a kid and have hated them ever since. I know it's irrational, but it is what it is...
with quality rifles. This might be an excellent avenue for you.
As another path, you might wish to consider a beat up gun with a good action then rebarrel with a new varmit style barrel while refinishing the stock/glass bedding yourself. It could be a route to a great rifle.
Of course the .223 just might be the perfect caliber for you but I did want to mention I have found real happiness with the .243 Winchester which is excellent for game up to and including deer. It is a very accurate round, mild recoil, and has long range performance on game.

well i just recently got a savage 116 ss weather warrior in 30-06 and it seems to be a great riflem very accurate, my reloads just arent quire there yet. i was thinkin about getting a stevens 200 in 223 but would i be just as satisfied as i would be with a savage or remington 700? ive noticed that all the remington 700s in my price range in 223 caliber have a 1:14" rate of twist. thats a little slow for the cartridge. that would limit me to very light bullets which reduce the accurate range of the round.
and just out of curiosity, what was the bad experience toolman? if somethin was wrong with the rifle, i would think it could happen in other remington 700s as well

The brazing broke on the bolt handle after firing a sighting shot, leaving the handle pivoting around the body of the bolt. It was my first deer hunt and I didn't get to hunt with everyone else because of a busted rifle. It was a borrowed gun, and after we got home, the neighbor took to a gunsmith in San Angelo who silver-soldered it back in place.
My dad has the Rem 700 SPS in .223 and it's a freaking awesomely accurate rifle. Other's have said that Savage is a good choice and I agree with that as well.
The Remington would be a great choice; however, the trigger is horrible. My dad replaced his with a Timney and is very happy with that. The Savage on the other hand has the AccuTrigger which is the best factory you'll be able to get.
I'd go with either, but if you're not wanting to spend and extra $80 on a trigger or get a trigger job, go with Savage.
Ya can't beat a 700! I have the cheapest one they make (ADL, wal-mart gun, matte finish, synthetic stock, blind mag) and it'll shoot better then I can! I have shot other BAs, and some of them are nice too...but I won't buy anything other then a 700 for myself (in a commercial hunting bolt gun).
I have been ogling the new 700 VTRs (they have a cool triangular barrel) they are designed as a "walk-around" varmit gun.

I have a 700 CDL, as far as I am concerned you can't buy a better bolt than a Remighton 700 for the money. I bought the CDL because I like pretty firearms but any 700 will do just fine. It really is the standard of the industry for the every-guy bolt hunting rifle.

ive had alot of luck with rem 700,s.I would really like to have one custom in 22-250.heavy barrel and all that.had i BDL in 30-06 and it is still one of the best shooting rifles ive had,besides a single shot bull barrel 204.
well if i were to get a 700, i would have to stay under like $450 or $500. that would pretty much stick me with a SPS or ADL(i cant find the ADLs much any more). and as far as i know, the 223 chamberings of the 700s have a 1:14" rate of twist, which isnt good for heavy bullets...which kinda takes the point out of a bolt gun as one of theyre main purposes is long range accuracy.
so if i didnt get a 700, whats the word on a stevens 200 in 223? or a marlin xs7 in 243? i just wanna stay on a budget, so as to have some money for reloading supplies, components, etc

I don't think you can even find a 1in14"twist Rem .223.They are 1in12"twist.I havn't checked Rem.out but Sav.now has bolt rifles in 1in9" I believe.!in9"twist is best all around for the .223rem.cartridge. ,,,sam.

oops my bad. 12" is correct. which is pretty slow. and that would drive me away from the 700 seeing as how i would push a bolt action to long ranges, to the end of the cartridges capabilities...
yes, and better yet stevens makes one in 223! $300 with the reliability of it being almost a savage rifle. 1:9" would handle the decently heavy stuff and be able to make it past 500 or 600 yards

I am looking into picking up a marlin XS7, myself. From what i've read online and heard from some of the owners, you can't find a better rifle for the price (They go for as low as $285.00 in some places). The Stevens 200 has also developed a great reputation as well.
To sum it up...you can't go wrong with any of those choices. The Remy700, Marlin XS7, or the Stevens 200 are all solid choices that anyone would probably be very happy with.
unless you are match shooting is the twist rate going to really matter to you, i would not let that be the deciding factor but price could be. rem 700sps for $529 and the sps varmint for $539, both no scope the marlin is Xs7 is $319 no savages in the local sales paper. I love my 700
Are the differences in the Model 700 actions just cosmetic? In other words, is an ADL the same as a CDL in terms of the steel used (and then the CDL is made to look better) or are the components and bar stock or whatever actually better in the more expensive grades?

i have a 700 ADL in 270 i bought 15 years ago and i love that rifle it will the last gun i sell if i ever have to sell any of them. its very accurite and always has been and killed lots of deer with it.

Just a note as I read through here, the Rem 700 VTR has a 1-9" twist and they do offer a couple of 'tactical' models all with 1-9" twist. I have a VTR and its a freakin' tack-driver, just going to set you back $800 or so, maybe less now.

The 700 SPS Tactical with a 20in barrel I own is prob the best shooting rifle I have ever shot at 100 yards. It shot 1/2 in groups as I was breaking it in. I put the rifle in a Hogue stock identical to the original overmolded stock except has the full length aluminum bedding block and it is now shooting 1/4 to 1/2 all day long with 62grn v-max reloads.
I never count any rifle out though. I reload til I squeeze every dang ounce of accuracy I can out of a rifle.....Im weird like that I guess. I love M700's, Win Mod 70's, Savages, and Brownings. Check the 700 Tactical out you won't regret it.
