| California is under court orders to reduce the
prison population by 40,000. Let's get real. Pushing 40,000 prisoners out to the street is a real crisis that needs addressing. Yes, a few of them will find jobs but a great many of them have only the routes of welfare or returning to crime for support.
I once lived in New Orleans so any illusion/fantasy I ever had about prisoners moving in large numbers to private sector jobs and becoming socially responsible citizens was crushed a long time ago. Returning to prison is a relief for many of them as they need food, shelter, clothing, medical care, etc.
Here is a real public safety problem.
