I got scammed!

Just a heads up, there is a credit/debit card scam going on right now where a place called MAGPROUSA is charging people 75 or 89 dollars... for nothing. I was lucky I caught it on my statement and was able to get the charge dropped. Got a new card on the way. I even looked it up on the googlyweb and found out its happening to more than just me. Here's a site if anyone cares to check it out: MAGPROUSA/Publicationsmax.com Complaints - Rip off

I might have missed it if it hadn't said MAGPRO, which my mind converted to something associated with guns. Mags? I thought. I havn't ordered any mags!

I got no idea how they got my info, but you guys and gals out there may want to check your statements extra close for a while just in case.

I would contact your state Attorney General and let them know what happened. So far the A.G. in my state seems to be doing a good job of fighting things like this.

Thanks for the heads up on this. This is probably a foreign based scam based on what some of the victims on the complaint site were saying in their comments. Hopefully, any search engines that carry the scam site will drop them. Hopefully too security companies like Norton and McAfee will include the name of the scam site on their pop-up warnings. Of course, the scammers will just change their name and do it all again ...

Not a bad idea. If the scam company is here in the U.S., then action can be taken.

I agree 100 percent thrillbilly, and mine is pretty much for work only. Checked over, filed, and paid in full every month, no matter what. Probably if I weren't so anal about my one and only card I would have missed this scam altogether.

Another one to look out for: These so-called "free trials", that are advertised on the internet, are very clever at hiding the fact that when you accept the free trial you are accepting "automatic shipment" of the product at $$$ per month. My wife caught it in time, sent the free samples back & called them to tell them that if they tried to bill us that we'd get a lawyer. To be safe, talked to our credit card company & they recommended we cancel the card. They also told us we they would cancel the freight for the samples off our bill. But, we felt that since we did authorize the freight, we'd pay it. Makes me suspect the TV commercials that advertise free samples. Can't read the "fine print" at the bottom of the screen. No telling what that'll cost you.

I have a visa DEBIT card only...just to pay online bills or for rental cars, Redbox rentals and other such things that require plastic. I have seen firsthand people who became swamped in credit card debt. I vowed in high school to not ever have a credit card, and I stood to that.
The only legal scams worse then credit cards are check-loan advance places, and those rent-to-own businesses.

Exclamation

Very timely warning! I just had this happen to me. Got an E-mail from my CC company yesterday saying they wanted to inform me of a 'suspicious activity' on my card. Called their number, and the nice lady went through the activity - I could see the monthly charges on my screen page, but she found an amount pending, not yet fully posted - from someone in NY for the amount of $178.81! I let her know that was a BOGUS amount - not anything I did! So, the card is cancelled, and a new one on the way. All my data and amounts will convert over to the new card, and the invalid amount SHOULD be gone. Hopefully!
Then I have to get on all the online vendor sites I deal with and change the CC number for ordering.
Keep and eagle eye on your CCs, and report fraud if you find something bogus!
