California: Sportsmen up in arms over passage of AB 962
Sportsmen's and pro gun groups are up in arms over a recent bill signed by Calif. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger that puts restrictions on the purchase of certain ammunition beginning July, 2010.
I just left my opinion below with the Los Angeles Times who carried the above article.
Does this mean that illegal aliens and gang members have to comply with this infringement to own and bear arms too? The right to bear arms includes keeping them loaded without an infringement or hindrance on the right to buy ammunition. The leftist 9th Circuit will undoubtedly hold up this sham of a law before it gets shot down later by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Any California members here ought to be banging out some angry emails to their state government officials if they haven't done so before this happened. They ought to be demanding judicial review at the state level too ... JMHO

This was just posted by me on a thread concerning the same issue. I don't know which thread is/was more appropriate for my post, so here it is again.
Below is my latest response another poster in the Los Angeles Times article who mentioned police involvement in the passage of this ill-advised law.
Quote:
No doubt there were some politically motivated individuals in the hierarchy of law enforcement involved. It was fashionable for New York politicians to have some "politician" police chief and a formation of unwilling and/or unwitting recent recruits from the police academy complete with white gloves and dress blues on hand during the signing of these sham laws. Bill Clinton was a master of that tactic too. The truth is that experienced front line law enforcement officers would never be in agreement with such a law. Rank and file law enforcement needs to team up with constitutionally minded citizens as they did in my state and get rid of this bad law and the bad politicians that made it. Start by getting active and getting heard; not just here, but politically and at the grass roots. Gangs, illegals, and crooked leftist politicians just slammed the honest and law abiding people of California. Let this be your wakeup call …

Actually, you know who needs to step up here, it's the ammunition manufacturers themselves. They are the ones that are going to LOSE money here. They ALL need to BAN TOGETHER and say, "WE WILL NOT SELL AMMUNITION TO ANY law enforcement agency, no national guard, no federal agency no state agency, NO ONE until this law is no longer a law.
A couple gun manufacturers, STI and Barrett, stepped up and did the right thing a while back and refused to sell firearms (the way I understood it anyhow) and now it's time the ammunition manufacturers take it even farther, ban together, stop selling and or supplying ammunition to those in California who need it to do their job and do the right thing for the law-abiding gun owners in not only California, but the entire USA because it is likely other states will do this if this is allowed to stay a law!
I wanted to add this. If the ammunition manufacturers DO NOT step up, in this way or any other, then maybe it's time we let them know how we feel about it. Then I suppose we could all just turn to reloading and buy as little as possible from them all and hit them where it hurts, their bank accounts and wallets!

GM, the American ammunition manufacturers like Winchester, Remington, PMC, and Federal already gave up a huge portion of their market years ago by being greedy and trying to stick it to the American consumers while shiploads of foreign military surplus ammunition arrived here to be sold at a fraction of the cost per round. The “big four” are still holding out with no sign of trying to mend their ways. If they think that the military will continue their present rate of ammunition consumption, they are wrong. Likewise, law enforcement agencies are already cutting back on live-fire training and increasing simulated training using high tech training aids. Having taught at a law enforcement academy, I question the wisdom of high tech training aids, but that appears to be the way things are headed since cost plays a role in operations.
I guess the American ammo manufacturers can still make some money marketing designer key chains, custom apparel, and luggage with their logos on them ... perhaps. In the meantime, up and coming companies like Seller & Bellot, Wolf, Aquila, and others we haven’t even heard of will gradually take the ammo market away from Winchester, Remington, PMC, and Federal. Perhaps, these new companies will move their factories to the U.S. the way Japanese auto manufacturers did in the 80s, settling in "right to work" states where they can avoid international shipping tariffs, United Nations disarmament efforts, and international maritime shipping and insurance costs. In the end, the free consumer market will dictate who will fail, who will prosper, and how business is done.

some of the provisions in this law are plain stupid. others are greatly misguided. It doesn't make any sense to keep ammo out of reach of the customers. I figure a gunshop is the last place someone would try to shop lift from. although, i think the expensive hollow points are usually behind the counter anyway. I resent having to leave a thumbprint. I would be happy enough to show my drivers license and handgun card.
in all honesty I don't think this will make much difference to the customer apart from higher cost.
The shop keepers may even do ok. they wont have to compete with internet companies.
Anyway, I am not voting for any incumbents next time. although, last time in my district she ran unopposed.

i was going to say stock up now, but the stores shelves are probably already empty and most of them probably wont reorder due to all the new paperwork they will have to do, Good job Arnold screw up your economy and put Kali farther in debt. Damn when is that place ever going to fall off into the ocean. second thought hope it dont , they will all move this way.
This is going to really hurt the owners of milsurp handguns that use 'oddball' calibers that the mainstream stores simply do not stock. Online mailorder is their only way of getting the ammo, unless they reload. They may find the ammo at gunshows - but now that will not be possible - that bit about keeping the ammo locked up away from the great unwashed masses. No more ammo piled on tables - SORRY.........
This is in reality a bald-faced attempt to restrict the availability of ammo for honest law-abiding citizens. It will have ZERO effect on crime. Except, the number of cases of break-ins for disarmed home-owners may jump.
Then there is the question of 'handgun ammo' in itself. What if you need to have ammo for your Hi-point Carbine or Berreta Storm Carbine? You ar S.O.L. too. And heaven help the gun-owners if the Goobermint decides ANY caliber used in the TC Contender is 'handgun ammo' - like .45-70, .30-30Win, >308Win, etc. Creative application of this law could result in nearly ALL ammo being restricted!
California based distributers are likely to relocate to other states. Not good for the already hurting California economy. Californians need to quit ducking and start fighting back through their legislators and grass roots organizations. I know some are, but are enough?
