I would buy the Mauser just because for 100 bucks its a good deal, as long as its in decent shape. Buy some milsurp ammo and shoot the hell out of it. If it shoots good then use it to hunt with too--with good Soft point ammo, of course. If it shoots bad then shoot the hell out of it with milsurp ammo anyway and go buy another rifle to hunt with. Or have it rebarreled.

Mossy at Dicks

Read all the bad stuff about the Moss 100 ATR, most of it turned out to be some clown who disassembled his bolt, put it back together wrong, and it came apart. That said, I picked up a 100ATR at Dicks in NH, nice checkered wood stock, floated barrel, 3X9-40 what I think is a Simmons, mine in .243. Seems great to me so far. Have an early Win 70 in 308, and that is a winner. Lotsa $$, tho, where the mossy was only $299 (no tax in NH). Accuracy is better than I am.
The Marlin is also a lotta gun for the $$. If money's not an object, go with the high end stuff. If it is, I'd go with either of these. And I'd take my .308 out in the woods any day. Reload down to 110 gr for some real zip, 180gr for knockdown.

If you really want the possibility of long shots (300 yards plus) I would go with the 30-06 or the .270, or even the 7mm-08. Even then (if it were me), I'd be leary of shots past about 350 yards without lots of range time with the rifle and ammo - store bought or reloads.

Hi guys. I have decided to to go with the marlin xs7 in .308. I decided on the marlin because I like the synthetic stock better, and I can find it in the synthetic stock in .308. I decided on the .308 for two reasons. 1) I have a BIGGER choice in store bought ammo. 2) I don't really expect a shot over 300 yards, I just want the ability to be able to reach out farther than that if it would come up. Don't worry guys. I will make sure to get plenty of range time before I try any shots that are really out there. Like I just said, I just was thinking of the ability to get out there. Thanks for all the help!
