Hi guys! Its been awhile since I've been here. I've come back for some advice. I've been looking for a new deer rifle, but something I could also do some target shooting. I don't want to spend a whole lot of money, though. Here are the specs I've come up with so far. Bolt action with blind magaZine(floor plate is ok), .308win(I've been debating 7mm-08, but I'm liking the 308 better), Where I'm going to be hunting I could possibly be seeing shots out to 500-600yds at most. I've looked at mossberg 100atr, marlin xs7, various savages, and a few others. I've heard of problems with the 100atr, so I have dropped that from the list(unless anyone can convince me otherwise), I'm liking the marlin xs7 and have heard 99% good things about them, and I've always had thought well of savage. I would like to keep the gun to $600 at most, but I'm trying to keep it around $400-450. Is there any other guns I should look at, or are these gonna be the best guns for the money?
The Stevens should be in your price range. As to 5/600yds,even with a magnum that would be required to have suficient power for a clean, ethical kill, the chances of a bad hit increase greatly after 200yds.Stay 300yds and under and either the 7mm-08 or .308 will do a great job for you.I emagine .308 would be easier on the wallet and to find ammo. Best of hunting. ,,,sam.

got to agree that the K-31 swiss would work well it can be scoped and stocked with ammo for your price range and is very accurate shells are a little harder to find but not much my local has them
Thanks for the ideas guys! Sam, are you saying that .308 isn't good for hunting past 300 yards, or that accuracy wise it isn't a good idea? I'll have to look into the k-31. Anybody else have any other ideas as far as guns?
I just remembered earlier today I was at Gander Mtn, and they have a mauser 98 that seems to be in good condition that is drilled, tapped, and in a new stock for $99. It has bases on it already so I would just have to get a scope and rings. It is 8mm and they only had one kind for $30. Do you guys think I should go for it?

$99 dollars might seem great, but have it looked over by a good gunsmith first.
To me it sounds like it is a piece of junk that somebody is trying to make a quick buck off from.A Mauser in good shape, that would make a great shooter should run between $250-$300.

I understand that, but it is completely changed. The stock is almost a lime green(I'm not sure what it is made of), non-matching numbers from what I could tell, it only has the front sight post(I guess they took off the rear sight), it needs a scope that it doesn't come with. $100 dollars sounds amazing I know, and that is why I came here. I'm gonna go back tomorrow and ask more about it. It is at a retail store, and they make sure that all used fire arms are able, and safe, to shoot before they put it out to sell. So I don't think it is, "I'm gonna take advantage of you."

Just be careful,I hate to see people give up their hard earned money.
Good luck

Thanks for the concern. I couldn't believe it when I saw it myself. I'm going to make sure that it is a good deal. Even if it ends up not being that great of a rifle, I'm sure I can atleast get $100 dollars worth out of it, and I can possibly use it as a base for a custom rifle in the future as well!
the 8 mauser is a very good cartridge especially if you reload or buy european ammo.
get a good scope for it, then if it don't shoot to your expectations just have it rebarelled.
you can buy and install a new trigger easily enough.
look at the safety on it to see if it is still the flip over type those are a pita to operate with a scope mounted, but can be replaced with a blank one and the new trigger has one installed usually.
make sure the bolt handle is bent down also, unless you want to get a scout rifle/scope type set up, then disregard the part about the safety and bent bolt.
be careful about the bbl as it may have been shot a lot in one of it's previous lives.
I was back again today, and I decided not to get it, atleast not yet. I asked one of the guys there, and he said that the reason it was so cheap was because of the sporterizing. They don't check to see how it shoots, only if it can shoot safely, so he couldn't tell me if it is decent. The safety isn't like the usual ones. When you are looking the rifle from the back, the safety is to the left at a 90 degree angle to the rest of the gun. When you activate the safety, it only turns about 45 degrees, it doesn't even go straight up. There is the eagle over the swastica on the left side of the gun along with "98 mod." next to it. On the bolt in two places I found a stamped "1908". I'm not sure if I'm going to get this gun. I'm tempted to, but at the same time I have the thought of just put the money into a marlin xs7 or mossberg 100atr. If I did get the mauser, do you guys think that I could use 30-06, or would this put undue wear on the gun? I've read about germans using the 06 when they were out of the 8mm, so I thought I would ask.

if you are talking about swaping ammo in the gun no you better not do that, i know you have heard this read this in every guns owners manual never use ammo not labled for use in this gun, with that said the are not even the same caliber 30-06 =.308 8mm=.323 30-06 case length 2.49 8mm case length 2.24 headspace totaly different. now you would not attempt to shot the 8mm in the 06 would you i hope not anyways so why would you the 06 in the 8mm, if you want the avaliablity of ammo and want to shot the 06 then buy an 06.

That Marlin or a Savage would be a good gun.If you want to shoot beyond 300
look at the 270,7mm mag,25-06..Out that far the scope has as much to do with
hitting also.
Shots at 500-600 yds. GOOD LUCK. Hitting deer or similar sized game at those ranges takes a superior marksman with exelent equipment. Not many "hunters" are so skilled or equiped.
I'm probably NOT going to get that mauser, and just put the money into a new rifle. If in the future it is still available, then I will probably grab it, but for now I have another problem. I'm still thinking the 308, but I'm also looking into the 7mm-08. I've done some reading, and the 7-08 seems to be just as good, if not better, than the 308. I'm having a hard time deciding between the two! What oppinions do you guys have between the two? If I do decide to go 7-08, then that will eliminate a couple different rifles that I've been looking at. I have to say though for some reason I'm just kinda pulled towards the 7-08.
Shooter dealers cost is around $ 288.00 for the Marlin XL-7 so go work you out a deal some where.
The XL-7 is hard to beat right now and should serve your purpose. Personaly I believe with all things considered the 308 is the best all around caliber to choose.
You've probable done what I did and reseached the 308 and if you ever get into reloading it only gets better but there is a some quality ammo being sold today to.
Have you looked at the Ruger Hawkeye rifles ??? Dealer cost on some of them is around $526.64 avg. Magnums are more... Good Luck ...A.H
Thanks A.H. The 308 is a good round, and I would like to get an m1a eventually, so this could be a way to get to know the round before I even get the m1a. I don't know why though, but the 7mm-08 is alluring to me. I have a feeling that eventually I'm gonna have a gun in 7-08 wether it be sooner or later.
