I hunted "with" them for years, and hunted "for" them after every hunt. Of course, there is still nothing like a pack of hounds on full tilt burning the trail of a running buck.

Hunting two pointers in pursuit of the wiley quails of Arizona!
Lousy conditions this season, as our drought continues and worsens. Belong to a bird-dog club, so at least the boys get some time on birds a couple of times a week or so---

you my firend are right on the spot with that. their is nothing like and never will be, it is a thrill just to hear them running one i could careless if i even see the deer althougt it is a + if you can. i got out of the dog bussiness about 2 years ago. althought i still go anytime some one offers to take me to thier land. wearhauser timber company made us stop useing dogs for deer, but allow us to run rabbits, coons, and hogs.

Hunting a great Llwellen setter named Molly. She is only 9 months but very good!! She is the great grand-daughter of Hank from Hunting with Hank fame. The only thing she is not doing real well on is retrieving, but getting there. Hope we get a break from the cold!! It is tough on me with wind-chills around 5 or 10 lately Shawn

Smile Followed

Having followed hounds since the beginning of time; running dogs; fox, rabbits, chasing the coon deep into the night.

Sir; hunting dogs; "outside'' is coming to an end. Crossing anothers land; without written permission, getting " yelled at; for doing nothing but following along.

The 'bawl' on track; heart-beats; racing; Yes sir; I do enjoy the 'race'

I have hunted Shorthairs for years except the last three.
I started in 1961 with a liver faced white ticked bodied male named "Hank"....I am now a lone hunter at best and still do alright. Yes i miss the excellent points and holds, the fetch ups the retrieves and especially the "Lets get some birds Hank" and watching his cropped tail still wiggle....I am a tired old man that remembers all the good dogs i have had and just will leave it at that.....

Earl--Say it ain't so! I'm probably older than you-for sure in worse shape-and wouldn't hunt upland birds unless I had a dog. I agree with you that seeing the drive to hunt and beautiful style a pointer exhibits is pure enjoyment.
Heck, just get yourself an older dog that has some good years left, and you both will be the better for the experience. Plenty of 'rescue' GSPs around. Our quail populations are really down due to the continuous drought, but my bird dog club trains 2x each week, so the dogs get a chance to point, retreive, etc--(tho they need a good bit of work on honoring other dogs' points)!

My Lab goes insane over birds. He's 10 months old now, but is a dandy on quail and pheasant. But he also thinks jumping in the bathtub with me is a cool thing too. LOL

Earl--I know what you mean by losing buddies. I don't handle loss very well, and in the past several years have lost my pointer bitch (Cricket the Wonder Dog), my Polish Yorkie, Stashu(sp?--supposed to be Polish for Stanley), and am rubbing the ears of my 7yoa pointer, Jake, who is dying of congestive heart failure.
My wife handles this better than I do--she says the dogs had a good life with us, did what they were bred to do, & we should be happy for that. I guess she is right, but it tears me up when one of them dies--they leave us too soon--
MsWabbit--Congratulations on your lab! Having one that is interested in upland game is a real plus--as for the tub, well, we all know how they love the water, even better when their person is in it to share!
Happy New Year to all!!

Smile Brings the Tears

Earl Easter: Sir; you and the "Polock"; know exactly how I have felt.
My ''Jake'' dog; {Running Walker} ?coonhound? extrodinaire; LOLOL; could really take me on some hikes; He loved 'racoons' and would git silly Me and that mutt; had others to wonder around the nights; He being my best buddy;
Burying a ''running hound'' at his ripe age of 17; tore me up; then; months later burying my ''MeatHead'' dog; She was probably the ''unsmarted'sss'' hound ever born; Absolutely tear the woods up at night and chase 'butterflys'' during the day; 'Wide the Hell open" all the time

I have others; buried all together; facing to the east I miss them; I miss the howls; the bawls; the chops on tree; sitting up at night; patching them up; worrying about the scapes; bumps and bruises

They are a part to our 'family' that are so very special; to have had; and enjoyed What "JOY" God shared with me

Hard to tell but his coloring tells me he's English. Is he treed on a daylight coon or is he squirreling?

I ran Walker and English coonhounds up into my early twenties then switched to beagles and bunny hunting. Finished several nite champions and several Hunting beagles field champs. I got out completely a few years ago and I miss it sometimes. Love the hound chase and good dog work.

I've gone dog hunting, the little devils are about like coyotes in Iraq, wound one with an m-16 and the other's try to kill it off to eat it. Those are very very very feral though.

On another note my family has never hunted with dogs, so I have nobody around to talk to, but I would like to get started. I would actually like to go for cougar, but that may be a bit far off. The wife wants an Irish Wolfhound, and I kind of want a large Munsterlander, but what do you guys think?
