Went shooting for the first time.

Over the past weekend I attended an open house at the local gun club, present were a couple of Glock reps, and the theme of the day were Glock pistols. I went with a small group of buddies, and for a small fee we got to test fire various Glock pistols. I fired a G17, G22, and forgot the name of the third one but it's a .45cal pistol.

I didn't shoot too well, haha. We fired at paper targets at about 5 yds, and my best grouping was 7" with the 9mm G17. It'll get better with practice I guess.

I had a lot of fun, and look forward to the next event. Still haven't acquired my licence yet, in a bit of a poor financial situation. Perhaps in spring.

Anyway, just thought I'd share that with you all.

Welcome DeadEyedShooter. It's great to hear from a first time shooter. Don't feel bad about your shooting prowess right now. You will get better with time. Just concentrate on the front sight as you line up your 3 references; rear sight-front sight-target. Squeeze, but don't snap the trigger, and make sure you are "sighted on target" at the precise moment the hammer (which you can't see in a Glock) hits the striker. I used to teach law enforcement recruits how to shoot; first with .38 special service revolvers, and then auto pistols, including the 9mm Glock 17 and 19, and the .40 Glock 22 and 23. We hope to see you around often.

I wouldm't roll out the welcome wagon, SightNSqueeze. He's been here longer than you have!

Interesting that you've been on the forum for about three years, but just went shooting for the first time. Sounds like fun.

Congrats on finding a new hobby/sport. Warning, it's addicting. I suggest you take a few classes if you are that new. Most ranges have an instructor on site who will give you lessons as basic of what end the bullet comes out of to advanced expert tips and everything in between. Remember with any gun there is only one important word: "SAFETY". The second most importand word is SAFETY and the third word, you guessed it, SAFETY. Treat every gun you touch or see as if it were loaded. Many people have been hurt or killed with an "Unloaded Gun". Always keep the business end of the gun pointed in a safe direction loaded or unloaded and never point a gun at something you don't want to kill or destroy.

The 9MM you mentioned is a great caliber to start with. Also a .38 special. If you like a revolver I'd get a .357 magnum because you can shoot .38 Specials out of it and then move up to .357 Mags when you grow into the gun more. Pretty easy to shoot and handle. The ammo is cheaper which will allow you to practice more but it is plenty powerful to stop a bad guy from attacking. Ask lots of opinions on what brands are good based on your budget then rent a few in your price range to test fire yourself and see what you like best. A gun I love you might hate and the gun you love I might hate. Doesn't make either a bad gun. I suggest the Springfield XD as a good starter 9MM. If you want to spend a little less money try a Taurus or a Kel-Tec. There is more experience and knowledge here on this web log than at any gun show or range you will ever go to and a great group who will always answer questions. I learn something here every time I open the blog.

Ontario...Canada, even...is a difficult country to own handguns in.

It's pretty darn difficult even to own a rifle.

And forget being able to use them for home defense...unless you Shoot, Shovel & Shutup.

Thanks guys.

I joined this fine forum a while ago, yes, purely out of interest. I haven't had a chance to go shooting until now. Long story short, got in a bad car accident, spent time recovering, the gun club i was looking to join got shut down by crazy city mayor, I got laid off due to the recession, and so the hobby kind of slipped my mind until recently I got an invite to an open house event and discovered the club was only 15 mins from my place of residence!

SightNSqueeze and KW Gary M. Thanks for the tips/suggestions. I will take the Canadian Firearms Safety Course (CFSC) and apply for my Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) as soon as I am a little more financially stable.

As for the name. It is what it is. I have one working eye, hence the dead-eye part. I'm new to shooting firearms, but I am an avid paintball player and have been playing for a handful of years, and thus I "shoot" something.

Big Shrek is right, hand guns are more difficult to own, but not impossible. Requires a different licence (yep, that's how we spell it up here in the Great White North) and stricter regulations. I think my first purchase once I get my licence would be a rimfire rifle, most likely in .22LR. I enjoyed shooting the Glock 17 very much, but would probably get some experience with long arms before going for my Restricted-PAL (required to own pistols).

Thanks again for the welcome guys, I look forward to increased participation in this forum as my participation in the hobby grows.
