Question What to Eat in a Crisis

"The practical and potentially devastating aspect about this is that here in America (and increasingly so around the world) most of us are accustomed to “just in time” shopping. We buy enough food for a week or so. We expect when we go to the store what we need will be on the shelf. The thought of a shortage or a crisis is the farthest thing from our mind. After all, the food truck(s) for Whole Foods show up every morning at 2:00 am right on schedule, so why should I be worried?"

Didn't we cover this in the post about eating your buddies?

Oh, besides a well stocked pantry, I keep water on hand. If food goes short, and I still have running water (or at least what I keep bottled, stored and potential to be bottled) I could stay holed up in my apartment for a solid month, maybe longer... guess I should do the same for my cat, he doesn't have a stash!

There's a local Chinese diner...

And, I've eaten there during that time...

I have not eaten any cat that I know of but I did spend 4 years in the Philippines. I'm not sure it was always chicken in their Chicken and Rice. I did eat some dog while I was there. I didn't know that it was dog before I started eating it. If the SHTF and times do get rough, I'm sure a lot of our neighbors pets will come up missing.

Wink

Wild game is not a problem for me, and I have plenty of squirrels in my neighborhood.
I have also been eyeing the neighbor's yappy little JRT for the grill - he'll fit nicely......

Make sure you cook your bugs. They carry some really special parasites. Cooked ones are good though just stay away from fuzzy caterpillars.

We have a small dog that's fairly obnoxious. I often caution the kids not to feed her too much because I want to be sure she'll fit in the crock pot the day fter the apocalyse comes.

Thumbs up

Frog legs taste like chicken - with a hint of fishiness.

Gator is good too.

Few people know how to can things anymore, either. Canned food or home canned foor will be safe to eat for a long time even if there is an extended power outage. How many have a good supply of canned goods, either home canned or from the store on hand? Very few. Rice keeps well as it comes from the store, along with dried beans and other things you find on the shelves instead of in the cooler or freezer. We as a nation have become dependent on electricity and all the conveniences it brings.

We as a nation have lost a lot of good knowledgeable talents that could really hurt us if the SHTF in the near future. Sewing, canning, knitting and crocheting and how to preserve meat for long time storage without refrigeration just to name a few.

I remember my mother canning and making her clothes from patterns she used to buy..

Frog legs are great they look and taste just like chicken legs but with flippers. I have been storing beans, rice and some canned goods when they are on sale. It's a good Idea to store up so when hyper inflation hits and you might not be able to afford enough groceries you can supplement it with your survival stash. I also plan to learn how to can in the near future, I am just a little paranoid about canning meat for the first time.
