I'm new too the site and new too hunting. Wich rifle is best for me starting out and what cal.? Mossberg 100 ATR, Rem. 700 ADL, or Weatherby VG1; .270 or .308?
I assume you're hunting for deer, of some kind? White/Black tail, mule, etc.
Remington 300, any model, would be a fantastic gun. Marlin XL-7s are great rifles, and so are Savage 110's. Weatherby rifles are also top-notch, but much more expensive... MUCH... more expensive... and largely unnecessary.
I believe .270 is a bit flatter shooting over the .308, so if you're looking at extended ranges (300yds+) you may want to go with the .270 over the .308. Either way, BOTH of those cartridges are great.
As a new person I would like to suggest one of my two favorite cartridges.
The .243 Winchester is excellent for all game up to and including deer.
It is mild on recoil especially when compared to the larger calibers. It is also very accurate even at long ranges.
There are a large number of good quality guns on the market. The Marlin XL line is very affordable and has gotten great reviews in the firearms magazines. However, I advise taking time to make a decision. A little research can go a long way toward making the best choice.
Stay away from the magnum calibers as they are not right for a person starting out. You need to have a rifle that will allow the practice necessary to get good.
For my two bits, the Remington 700 is usually very accurate right out of the box (at least mine was) the .308 and .270 are both fine cartridges, though I usually grab the .270 if I'm going hunting. (I'm a product of Jack O'connor's brain washing)
If your stuck on which caliber to get check out www.winchester.com and click on the ballistic program...its free and you can compare up to 5 or 6 different calibers, bullet weights, etc... very easy to use.
I want recommend a brand rifle but the 308 being 30 caliber is best for Deer and target shooting.
I think you'll be disapointed with anyother common caliber...A.H
Tikka T3. Very well made rifles at a very affordable price. The mossberg hasn't gotten the best reviews and I personally wouldn't get one. They make fine shotguns but not the rifle line. The Tikka will cost about $500 vs a $700 or more remington 700. Savage makes some fine rifles as well. The caliber depends on what you want to use it for.

A regular ol' plain Jane Remington 700 sure isn't $700... If you want to get the crazy 'Alaskan' or 'Mountain' rifles, with titanium, stainless steel, and expensive laminates/other stocks, be my guest.
Go to Walmart and see if they have a Rem 700 ADL in .270 (bet they do). If not, they'll order one for you and maybe the only places you'll find it $5 or $10 cheaper might be at a Sportsman's Warehouse or somewhere like that. The reason WalMart's prices can be beat is because they recently switched suppliers from Lipsey's to someone new.
The rifles they sell are the same as you'd buy anywhere and are NOT "seconds" sent from the mfr to be sold cheaply like I read a few people believe.
Anyway, you can get a Rem700ADL with a 3-9x40 scope for about $460. This is worth it because you'll have a scope to get you started and your knowledge and experience will grow as you're looking for a better scope for the rifle. The scope will be a no-name brand but I think you'll find it's pretty nice. The Rem 700 series is nothing to scoff at. Now, you're not going to like buying ammo all the time, so you can start looking at reloading equipment....... ((( )))
don't forgeet to look at a ruger hawkeye.
one in 308 would be a nice companion to my 358 and my older mk-II stainless lightweight in 308 at least i could [maybe] shoot the new one.
instead of trying to pry the old ones from my kids hands.
