Case

I was wondering if the case knife with a guthook is a good knife. I don't remember the name but i found one for $50. I have one case knife and it will hold an edge.

I'm not sure about the newer ones, but Case used to be the standard by which most other mass-production knives were judged. I had a very small two bladed Mother-Of-Pearl handled penknife that would shave hair with a few licks on a leather strop-I never used a stone on it. Granted, I never used it hard due to it's size, but it had the best steel of any store-bought knife I've ever owned.

Well...I love my Case knives...but I hate guthooks, so no recommendation here.

Personally,

I do not believe a gut hook on a knife is a worthwhile product.

I just have never seen anyone actually use one of these "blades" or whatever you wish to call it in the real world.

I have, several times and hate them. If your unzipping a carcass the guthook cuts from top and hence cuts hair in half making a mess.
I wont make a custom knife with a gut hoot for that very reason. Not that its hard to make, just useless IMO

Have had CASE knives in the past and they were good, quailty knives.
A long the way I switched to BUCK knives and been there ever since.
More a personal choice than anything else as both are quality products.

I've a Case CV Medium Stockman and besides fighting rust it gets wicked sharp on all three blades.

I'll be after a Case Canoe if my test of a Rough Rider proves the pattern.

That CV steel, which is just a chromium/vanadium tool steel is pretty easy to stop from rusting with a light bit of oil on it, though in those old Case knives the patina is much of their charm.
