Mk4 mod I sporter with 22Inch barrel?

Found one of these at a LGS in like condition and would like some info. From what I could find out they where made at the factory towards the end of the war. Believe it has a 22" barrel. Any info would be appreciated.

Did you mean “No. 4, Mk 1?” It looks like a really nice sporterized version of a No.4, Mk 1 Enfield service rifle. Are there any markings or arsenal stamps still on it?

I dont think it came out of any "Enfield" factory looking like that.
There were several companies that produced sporterised enfields from war surplus.

With the cut down barrel its not even a candidate for rebuilding back to its original form so just enjoy it for what it is - a hunting rifle.
Value ? maybe $100-$150 depending on local market conditions.

just remember though if its a golden state arms they were an importer that imported WWII surplus already sporterized and i do believe that they have stopped importing and the company hasnt been open since the 60s so.

I didn't see any golden state markings but did find this link.
Sporterized Lee-Enfields

Thought it looked like the Maltby No4 MkI Sporter. I'm not trying to convert it back to a military rifle. I like the sporter lines and the bore looks like it hasn't been fired much. Best part was the price, $150. When it gets out of layaway I'll post photos.

That's a nice looking sporter, I took my first white tail with a .303 sporter like that. Good buy at $150, go buy lots of ammo and have fun.

R.O.F.M. NO4 MK1 1941 Parker Hale sporter 303 w/ Matching SN # 015569 on the receiver, barrel and bolt.

Can't wait to take her to the range. Any one know what the R.O.F.M. means?

ROFM = Royal ordnance Factory - Maltby

Manufactured at the "Maltby" plant in Maltby, Yorkshire

They also used "OFM" and "RM" at different times.

Took her out to the range on Sat. What a sweet rifle. Shot like a dream. front of the gun like to jump a bit off the sand bag. My biggest problem was seeing any detail on the target at 100 yards. Old eyes. Hit the 8.5 x11" target everytime just couldn't see the bulls eye at that distance. 50 yards nice 2" groups slightly low to the right. I have a feeling Santa's bringing me a scope for Christmas.

Liked the photos on the link, expecially the checkered Parker-Hale Sporter and the BSA Commercial Sporter. The fold-down front sight is a really cool feature!

I’m 60 years old and like yourself have “Chronologically gifted eyesight” or tired old eyes. Your eyes are just like a camera lens, they focus and set the aperture size to bring the subject your looking at into sharp clear focus.

Below, camera aperture sizes and the effect they have on what YOU see.

Below, top photo of chain link fence and what a young person sees, close and distant objects are in sharp clear focus.
Bottom, in this photo close up and distant objects are out of focus and are no longer sharp and clear (what old farts see)

As the Marine Clint Eastwood said in the movie “Heart Break Ridge” you need to “Adapt Overcome and Improvise” or poke the younger guys in the eye and remember “Age and deceit will beat youth and vigor any day of the week."

Old people need to close down the size of their “aperture” and bring everything back into focus (and see the front sight AND the target)

Below clip on “cheaters” with a small aperture hole drilled in the lens to bring everything into sharp clear focus.

Store bought suction cup model (I prefer the flip up sunglasses)

I shoot at our 50 yard range because this range is not covered, (lots of sunlight) the 100 yard range has a roof over it and because of the shade it changes the aperture or hole size requirements.

Bottom line, the size of the hole you drill in the sunglass lens depends on “your” eyes and the available lighting conditions.

BUT its still fun to kick the snot out of the youngsters who show up at the range with scopes on their rifles with an “Old fashion peep sight”.

“Age and deceit will beat youth and vigor any day of the week.”

(Darn, I had two flyers)

Dayum Edward, nice shooting and way to level the playing field Does reducing the rear aperture size achieve similar results ?

Parker Hale

That looks to be a fine Lee Enfield; Parker Hale were a very high quality British gunmakers for over one hundred years, beginning in 1880; I would expect that any of their products would reflect this! They were sold as insolvent in, I think, 2000? A sad end for a fine name.

Their target aperture sights are still keenly sought here in UK, as being an option to 'going optical'. (Especially by those of us with 'tired eyes')

PH were contibuting to UK forces specialist weapons until their demise, their M85 sniper's rifle being a typical, and fine, example.

"Does reducing the rear aperture size achieve similar results ?"

The Enfield rifle answers that question for you.

Peep sight on my 30-30 set up for fast action shots at moving deer in the woods.
(Called a ghost ring sight or “battle sights” on a military rifle)

With a smaller aperture screwed in I’m all set for sitting in my tree stand and making tighter or more accurate shots.

The five shot group shot above in the X-ring was done with a Parker Hale PH-5C target sight at 50 yards AND wearing my clip on sunglasses with the “2nd small hole”. (Remember I have tired old eyes that can’t focus on the front sight AND the fuzzy target)

NOTE: I sold the PH-5C because:
1. The smaller the diameter of the aperture, the less light that comes through the hole and this starts to darken the image or what you are shooting at.
2. My 100 yard range is covered by a roof and this cuts the light down even more, and forces you to use a larger diameter hole in your aperture sight.
3. I’m too cheep to by the $100.00 “adjustable” aperture for the “visually challenged”
4. Brail sights or a scope will be needed in a few years anyway.

Below, adjustable aperture shooting glasses that this cheap bastard doesn’t want to spend the money on “yet”.

If any of you have problems seeing in dim lighting conditions I have the plans for the Paul Hogan Magnum Roo light.

Actually I love koala bears and would never hurt one, BUT if you have ever been in a forum with lots Australians and loose a postal match to them, you find ways getting even with the Ozmanics.
