I'm beginning to believe that guns should only be made of carbon steel. Blue them, nickel plate, silver or gold plate them if that's your taste, but leave the stainless for your kitchen sink, and leave the aluminum for pop cans. I really do think that there is an inheirant weakness in stainless steel. I've seen it in knives. Stainless doesn't hold as good an edge as carbon, and doesn't hold it's edge anywhere near as long. At least that's been my personal experience.

i would like to say i was using every precaution in the book....but unfortunately no. i had just put on my sunglasses cuz the sun had come out and was blinding me....think i'll WEAR glasses from now on. No, the shultz & larson incident didn't teach me to wear glasses....this one did tho. hearing protection? that's only worn if other people are shooting so i dont jump. i'm guessing either a 2x charged load, or the first round weakened the gun and 2nd finished it in....either way, it shouldn't have happened, but glad it did, now i'm wearing glasses like all the time lol. i'll have to get the remaining box from gunsmith, i gave him the rest for him to dissect and weigh grains and check for flaws. he said the #2 chamber that blew seemed to be slightly conical shaped at the front....like it was smaller diameter at front than at rear. I wonder if the chamber blocked bullet from exiting?

Mike82: Sir; dang; what a mess. Women do love tatoo's and scars; but dang; what a way to "dress" to impress.
Thankfully; you'll have another day to do some shooting
Follow-up; where this story might have twist and turns
Thanks; for sharing! I think

glad you are o.k. and sorry for your loss of a firearm. I bought my 629 in the early 80 s and have fed it a diet of near max loads from day one. so far, so good. I think the problem with the one illustrated would have blown up a gun made of any material. (plugged barrel, over charged load, wrong powder etc.) I agree that a blued steel gun is a little stronger but stainless is more than adequate for use in firearms

If it was the ammo,is there any way to get your gun paid for? I havent read a box of factory ammo in years, don't know about any "use at your own risk" or other warnings??

Hello The Question still Remains, WHAT Ammo was it ? If it was Re-Loads your recourse is to Mount it on the wall and treat your wound's.. You Loss. If it was factory ammo, who ever made it would be buying me another handgun at the very least. To say S&W's are Junk or commonly destruct would be Just Plain ignorant and Unfounded. Most revolvers that Blow up like this have had a Double charge or the wrong Powder used. I have seen Rugers Blow the same way, and I wouldn't Place a Tauras in my hands afer I saw how Terriffic their service Policy was for small problems, one like this would close their Doors For Good.. Hammerdown

For your own protection I wouldn't just let a gun smith dissect the ammo. I would have it done professionally as an investigation. S&W nor your ammo company is going to want to take responsibility for what happened. To protect your investment and get paid for the damages I think you will need the services of a professional. I'm not saying go take it to a lawyer and all that horse pucky.

Hey Einstein
Can you show me where he answers it as anything OTHER Than Factory Ammo? I wanted to Know the BRAND, But Perhaps You should be spending Less time on Criticism of how I responded and more Time on The Focus of my response...
