I would think that after opening zip lock bags would work. Once opened they would more than likely be used within a few months anyway if that was all there was to flavor food. Spices don't last all that long normally and I don't know how they're making it work in the cans for longer term storage. I bought a case just because I could but I haven't opened any yet.

The only spices I need are tears and gunoil. And the tears are never mine.

So for all of those that don't know... Salt is a mineral and not a spice. Salt never spoils. Sugar doesn't either. 3 ways of preserving things is dry, salt or sugar... Remember that Jelly, jam and preserves are all loaded with sugar and almost never spoil...

Dry the spices and herbs that you like OR stick them in oil. If you put garlic or thyme or things like that in oil, they will hold for quite a while. If you are packing away, remember to heat them up to at least 80c for a few minutes to kill bacteria.

That is why canning works...

I'm not so sure about sugar, but you're right about salt. Jelly, Jam and so on have to be canned or refrigerated to keep. At least any that my family has ever made
If I really expected Teotwawki, I'd buy two 80# bags of salt, and through em in my basement. They'd be worth their weight in, well silver any way.

i cam in late to this discussion but yeast is not neccessary... personally i don't drink (choice not law) but i do know that there are different ways to make bread... one that spoilage is hard (hard tack, which is water, flour, and a little salt) and any form of flatbread (softer and doesn't use yeast, can also make it with flour water and a little salt) this way you can have bread but not have to worry about using yeast

Billy, you forgot to mention the concertina wire chili powder,
the R&R red pepper,
and most important,
the SHTF sage.
