New Smith need info.

Today i bought a handgun from my uncle. It is a Smith and Wesson 67-1 38 special CTG. It has wood grips, adjustable rear sight and a orange insert in the front sight. I paid $300.00 for this gun and an H&R 929 22LR DA Revolver. Did i do alright?. What does CTG stand for?
Also does anybody have a way for identifing the date of manufacture of smith and wesson's from the serrial number?

You done good! I believe CTG=cartridge. Someone on this site will probably be able to give you any info you ask. Wouldn't surprise me if somebody can tell you the name and date of birth of the guy who put the original grips on it at the factory.

Look at this thread in the S&W section. There might be some info there that would help with some of your questions. Recent Aquisition S&W 38 Special CTG

You seem to have done OK for the 2 pistols. CTG stands for cartridge.
You can contact S&W for a manufacture date. Your barrel is pinned. S&W stopped pinning barrels late '70s to mid '80s but I cannot give you an exact date. Your sn. is on the butt of the grip. The numbers on the crane when you open the cylinder are production marks. The sn may be stamped there, if it's an early gun
