9 Hours With Two Pheasants…

Well some of you folks have been asking about when Pennsylvania's Pheasants season comes in and it was today. I was supposed to go youth pheasant last week but ended up with a bad tooth and a really bad infection that kept me down. I usually go with my wife's brother and his young kids as we adults are not allowed to carry shot guns.
Full of rain this morning, we really got soaked. My two boys and I walked up the almost three mile hill to the top and i was lucky enough to get the first bird that flushed about 30 yards in front of me in a chest high tall brown grass.
It was not a very good day to hunt as the birds sat tight, but just being there was still our main objective. This was the only bird that we got, but 5 other flushes that the two boys just could not connect. We went home after 5 hours and dried our wet hunting clothes. The two boys had to head back to their homes about one hour and a half away. This gave me a second chance to travel back up to the original spot and try it again. This is where i shot the second bird..…….. it finished my day as we are only allowed two birds…
Hope you like the pictures, my wife took them as she has a long lasting electronic file of all the pheasants we have shot for the last 10 years.
She makes posters of them and hands them out to each of us for Christmas…….Earl

Anything would have been better than rain and lots of it...LOL.
I love hunting in the snow, especially easy to track them and know for sure if they are even there. Last year at the end of the season i tracked two birds together and ended up with a double flush and two birds. I was only there in time for the walk up the hill and back down within minutes and i was done........
Hey thanks for viewing and if i get lucky again i will post some more.

We hunt on a reserve where they raise the birds, and you pay x-dollars per bird for release. It is a very target rich environment.

Thanks for viewing

Bunny...,ROTFL...
Well i would be afraid of showin any parts of my old self especially with a few
pheasants birds.
Now maybe when Fall Turkey season comes and i get one i could celebrate a little, but i don't think that would go real well with the women folk gettin the dry heaves or the vapors..ROTFL.....You aint too young to know what the vapors are is ya...LOL..

TGF
My sons paid for a hunt like that last January and we had a great time but also a lot of work in the fields in -8 windy weather. Glad you also had a good time with that hunt, some think it is easy just because they are there...

Hey Jimbo
Thanks for stopping by and good luck Wednesday. If you could please post some picture for this old guy...it just makes me happy....

Larry
Thanks always for a great response. The birds this year are a little better looking.
It seemed to be a long wait this year for the seson to finally come around..i live for this time of year..

AH
You are right it is the ruger over and under 12 Ga.
I mentioned in a letter to you i was second guessing myself and wanting to take the
mossberg 500 pump,3 shells ta two. But had decided to go with the ruger,it had plenty enough coats of wood wax on her and gun oil to repel the rain.
It was only shot two times in 9 hours or so of hunting and i think it would have liked a lot more shooting...LOL..Thanks Mike fer stoppin on in..........

Steve
You welcome there buddy, i will go out on Monday ta see iffin i can git some more.
I visited a site a few weeks ago and took a peek at Moose's Ground Chickens.that really got the blood flowing for me...

Never been Pheasant hunting. Though I have taken a crack at wood cocks a couple of times and some turkeys during deer season.

I am curious about how they are prepared.

Thanks Captain
It was almost nine hours but my sons for the first 5 missed most of there birds...
I shot the first one at the same time my youngest shot,he was over to the right so if there where any BB's in it they would have been in the left side of the bird...LOL So i stripped the bird after the pictures and there where 5 on the birds right side...LOL I did offer the bird to him but he kept saying i don't know how i missed such an easy shot....
We had fu but were soaked...

cremley
Thanks for stopping by and taken a look see..And thanks for the nice comments.....

sksnoob
Well we soak them over night in salt water and milk with a little vinegar. And just stuff em like you would a chicken.... This year i will wait until i have a little over 10 birds and send them over to the farmers house so he can smoke them. We soak them in brine solution for 5 days and he hangs them in a netting in the smoker for i think 7 hours at 180˚....
We use apple or hickory chips found on our property.....He owes me big time cause i spent 50 hours or more helping him build this outdoor smoker...The thing with smoking them is that you can leave them on a counter top for a long spell....days... and just keep snacking on the meat all day long with out getting sick......
