| Keeping a Lab Busy....Any Suggestions???
He has been up since 5:30am. We played fetch with a tennis ball, a stick and a frisbee in the yard. Brought the tennis ball in the house and continued playing fetch with that. He played in the mud puddle in the driveway. Rolled the tennis ball under the bed and couch several times then realized he couldn't fit under either of them so I had to dig it out, he chased the cat, chased my two rat terriers, ate a raw hide, jumped on the bed and tried humping the pillows, messed up the comforter, ate a spider on the floor, learned how to open the screen door on his own, tried to eat a wheel off my computer chair, chased the cat again, humped the lab pillow in the living room, climbed in the bathtub and it was empty, went to the other bathroom and slid the shower doors open and fetched a bottle of shampoo, dumped all his toys from a basket onto the floor and scattered them everywhere. Is trying to learn to open the cabinet with the dog treats in it. Now he's sitting in a corner, nope, wait, just went to the other room......Dang it, now I gotta go see what he's up to now.
HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPPPPPPP P! Do you think Nyquil will make him sleep?????? I didn't have kids for a reason, and I think this was the reason.

Very intelligent dog. How old?
Would start with obedience classes and agility training courses and classes.
It would give him a job.
4H usually has these classes offered cheap.
Fun for both of you!
Benydril may help.

He's getting trained on retrieving and he can pretty much outdo most of the other dogs he's put around. He's a little over 8 months old. I finally locked him up in his kennel so I can take a shower. If he wasn't locked up he'd be in there with me trying to motorboat in the tub and fetching shampoo bottles and flooding the bathroom.
I am thinking about taking him for a ride to PetsMart in a little while and letting him pick out a new toy to keep him busy. He's really smart. He just learned how to play dead and I taught him to high five me. He knows he can get away with a lot of stuff with "mama". And I believe a puppy should be having fun, he's just wearing me out today.

My cat is hiding under my dresser in the bedroom. He does that everytime the dog is out.

If you get him rubber hamburger he will steal real ones off table, same with hotdogs, shoes, etc.
Best luck weve had is with a toy bear about 8" long or a stuffed puppy, or both. I think they are green. The pup will be like a playmate or teddy bear for them, maybe even a 'girlfriend', LOL!...........Tony

Kong toy. Stuff a treat up inside it and he will have something to work on for a while. Definitely counseling for the pillow. Smart cat. And he will settle eventually, you know about submissive holds for pups? kinda like what an older dog would do when they got tired of a pup (except you don't bite their throats :-), BUT you can't make it a game.

Also there is a toy called a busy ball, by my wife.
Its about 6" dia, small treats go inside and dog pushes it around with nose and treat falls out and dog eats and pushes for more.
We use kibble because its small.
Ours is dark blue with paw prints on it. Tricky Treats Ball Dog Toy by Omega Paw - Toys - Dog - PetSmart
Very similar to this.

He only humps the lab pillow when he has a stuffed animal in his mouth. LOL
He is not bashful about sticking his head over your plate, and he will drool if you don't give him a snack when you are eating. It looks like toxic waste running out of his mouth. The treadmill is a good idea, the first time he missed his step, rolled off the treadmill and put a hole in the wall, then what? hahaha

Hang a Wubba from a rope in a tree...he'll enjoy jumping up and grabbing it...tie it to a stout but limber branch, so it will pull and tug back. My dog LOVED that setup! http://www.kvvet.com/KVVet/dept.asp?...FQ4MDQodsXYksg
You could buy one of those tennisball slingshots....it goes further so he runs more with less stress on your arm. Amazon
A duck traing gun would be cool...it launches a duck replica quite aways...it's for training retrievers. Cabelas sells 'em. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/te...=cat20864&rid=
LOL it gets more expensive....but the best "toy" for a lab is a nice fenced yard and a companion lab....they'll spend HOURS playing together....labs are happier with another dog for 24 hour companionship IMO. http://askspikeonline.files.wordpres...-lab-puppy.jpg

Well, I'd like a fenced in yard, but not convenient the way my land is set up with the house.
I just took him 20 miles to Petsmart and let him pick out a toy and a chew bone. Then took him to a friend's house another 12 miles away from that who has a full grown black lab and a 2 month old black lab. They swam in the pond, fetched sticks and played for almost 3 hours. He slept all the way home. In fact, there's some snoring going on right now-Thank God.

Get used to it,lol.. I've had labs all my adult life, and they are a ball of energy for up to two years old. They start to wind down abit after that.

It does get better. it took my female lab about 18 months to fully outgrow the chewing phase, but it will happen.
+1 on a companion dog, my lab's sister lives 3 blocks from us and my parents have a large fenced in yard.
i'll take her over there and let them wear themselves out.
my lab loves our 2 cats to the point that she grooms them, and the cats eat it up. they will actually go up to her and flop in front of her until she does it

We have had three great labs, every one of them were fireballs till around three years old..I got so tired of 100% attention constantly i purchased a Quad and ran the dog at a slow speed for a half hour and watched them finally sleep so i had a little peace. Walking with them was always not good enough and i just don't run any where anymore...
I don't think there are any easy ways settling them down...LOL..But good luck with one of the most famous dogs in the world that just want to please there masters....

I'll second the Kong Toy -- the big red rubber bell shaped one. I have one that worked very well for a Boxer for 14 years, and was shared with a Bull Mastiff. It is now surviving an Airedale pup quite well -- she's 4 months and teething. Get a dog biscuit that is big enough that you need to squash the Kong to fit the big end of the biscuit in. Insert biscuit completely, let the dog smell it, and give him some room. It should keep him busy for quite a little while, but he'll throw it, stomp it, growl at it, bark at it, paw it, and generally abuse the thing 'til the biscuit breaks and parts fall out. Even after he learns the trick, it'll keep him amused a while.
Second, fill a 1 or 2 liter bottle about half with water and hang it from a branch or porch beam. Set it high enough that the dog needs to reach or maybe jump a little to reach it. Make sure the rope/string is strong enough that it will hold up to the pulling and so on, likewise the branch or porch beam you attach it to.
A woman I work with has an 8 month old lab, and she is going nuts because the dog tends to eat the furniture unless someone is playing with her. My Airedale is hyper and likes attention, but relatively quickly learns what things are not for chewing.
