I got a good deal on a Remington cantilever rifled slug barrel for my 870 last year. Been debating on whether or not to keep it. A lot of the shotgun sabots are around $2 a piece!! Too rich for my blood!!
I've shot the Breineke rifled slugs through my smooth barrel and they do a good job but don't think your supposed to shoot them through a rifled barrel. Does anyone know of any good sabots for whitetail that don't cost an arm and a leg? If I can't find any, I may trade the barrel for something else.
I have heard both sides of the rifled slug in a rilfed barrel but the generally accepted asnwer is of course that rifled slugs are not safe for shooting through a rifled barrel and are only for smooth bores.
Two of the guys in my hunting party use remington buckhamers. They are a full bore slug ment for use in rifled barrels. I just sighted my new slug gun using buckhammers and they shoot pretty good. They are not as costly as sabot slugs. I picked up 5 round boxes of buckhanmmers for 6 something a box from Cheaper than dirt. I wasn't finding them around my home and wasn't going to be near a hunting super store before I needed to sight the gun it. Not sure what they cost at most stores but I know they are much cheaper than sabots.

Thanks Jashoffa I'll have to look for the Buckhammers. I'm debating on whether to keep the slug barrel and after seeing the prices of some of these sabot slugs is really got me thinking. I bought the barrel on a whim last year and haven't put a single round through it yet.
Being a slug gun state, Iv'e seen a few use foster slugs in their rifled barrels. Yes, you may see some leading and other by products of normal combustion. A lead slug is traveling in a rifled barrell at approx 1300-1700 fps, the same or less than some lead projectiles in barrles with lands and grooves. Every gun is different, clean the barrel. That all said, typically foster type slugs perform best in a smoothbore gun, sabot slugs perform best in a rifled barrel.
Slug guns are not typically "plinkers" the cost of the slugs is normally a short term affair. Shoot a few for sight in, harvest a deer. If you like to go out and shoot 100 rounds, it will get expensive either way, diminishing returns and a sore shoulder.
There is absolutely nothing unsafe about shooting foster type slugs in a rifled barrel.If they are accurate from a smoothbore,they are more accurate from a rifled barrel that puts a spin on them.However,I choose a smoothbore because the shots aren't that long,the accuracy isn't that much less,and you can't use any kind of shot in a rifled barrel,including buckshot.I have a couple rifled barrels,just don't see any advantage in using them. ,,,sam.
I shot some Remington Sluggers and some 00 buck out of my smooth bore yesterday, they were accurate to 50 yds. There's no bruise, but i feel it today. Sluggers run a dollar apiece.

In the zone I normally hunt in, we can use centerfire rifles too. But, in the zone I live in, it's slug only.
There are few deer here but there are some monster bucks near where I live. Kinda on the fence whether to go through the trouble of buying a scope and posibly spending $20 on ammo to get this thing sighted in.
The regs where I live allow muzzleloaders during modern gun season so if I do get a chance to go, I can always use my ML.
I may end up putting the barrel in the Trading section and see what someone will give me for it.
I always choose to use my rifled barrel H&R ultra slug hunter over my smooth bore Remington, with Winchester supreme partition golds (yes $15-$20 per 5 rounds) I can get 3"-3.25" groups @ 200 yards, yes 200 yards, no smoothbore w/ foster type slugs can compare. At 100 yards and under the accuracy between the two is slight, giving the edge once again to the rifled barrel....My Mossberg w/ foster style slugs and rifled barrel will shoot 1.5" groups at 100 yards, plenty good and cheap to shoot...

my H&R Ultra Slugger loves the buckhammers I can not praise them enough! At 100 yards all 3 slugs were touching when I brought back the paper! The prettiest cloverleaf you could get! Mine prefers 3 inch over 2 3/4 at 1550 fps you hear: BANG.. Woosh...Thump. it is quite comical!

Brenneke KO's are cheap and can be used in smooth or rifled bore. As do most of Brenneke's slugs except the 3" Gold Magnum and Black Magic. IIRC, they recommend rifled bore only for those two.
