Bud,
First and foremost, what are you trying to do??

If you're after some long shots, spend the money.. If you're just looking for something that's going to put bullets in the correct spot at a couple hundred yards, your options are WIDE open!!

My 20" varmint AR is wearing a $30 Simmons discount scope from Walmart, on top of a $15 riser and a set of $20 rings.

At 100-200 yards, it drops rounds into a MOA circle just fine, every time.. If I were shooting at 500 or more yards, I'd take this off and put it on a .22 where it belongs and pony up for a decent scope.. But for what I'm doing, this is fine.

What are you after?

+1...
Don't spend good money on a scope and then waste it by getting a cheap mount...

I'd recommend one of the burris mounts that positions the scope a little farther forward... Can be found for around $70

Burris AR-P.E.P.R. Mount

As for scopes... Depending on what you're going for, the Millet 1-4 is good, nikon prostaff 2-7 or 3-9, leupold rifleman...

Just let us know what kind of shooting you expect to be doing...

300 yards max for fun shooting, next question will be a scope for a m14 500-600 yards.

Get the Burris mount and a Burris 3-9x Timberline scope. It's an excellent combo for a AR. Not too pricey, and the scope isn't huge so it doesn't add a lot of weight to the rifle. I have one on my 6.8 Carbine and it's turning into an excellent deer set up.

It's a Model 1 Sales 20" Varmint kit. ER Shaw bull barrel. I ordered it with that gas block and free float handguard.

Leupold 4.5-14 x14 LP/t PR is what's on mine now & again. But too boring to keep on there all the time, more fun with Iron sights.

Personally I decided on a Weaver V24 6-24X44. It's crystal clear and bright even at the hihest magnification. I can see mosquitos on the target at 100yards. The mount is the Burris P.E.P.R.
