Thumbs up Fun after setting up the deer stands

Today my two son's in law, and my 8 y.o. grandson and I set up three deer stands for use on opening day of deer season in MO (Nov. 14th) and afterwards.

Then we headed back to deer camp and used a bench for a little target shooting.

This was my grandson's (Cole) very first time to shoot anything beside a .177 air rifle. He handled the .22 Henry just fine and put a few rounds in a pretty good cluster at around 40 yards. Then he fired off a couple of 30.30 rounds which didn't bother him one bit.

Now this was a fun day...sunny, 60's temperature, outdoors, and plenty of signs of deer tracks and rubs.

Hm. Seems like your Chiefs shirts may have thrown off some aim a little bit. I guess I shouldn't be poking too much fun at the Chiefs, as the Seahawks are having a terrible year so far. But hey, they can still go 12-4 or 11-5 lmao... Looks like you guys had a great time. But November hasn't happened yet?

Looks good Ox! Only thing...I'd suggest a safety harness for the youngster (and the oldtimers) next time! LOL better safe then sorry.

Thank you all for your kind comments. Yesterday was a day I'll never forget...and no doubt Cole won't either. He said later, "Grandpa, my shoulder is a little sore." (ha) No doubt with the recoil of the 30.30 on his 60 lbs body. But...he said it wasn't bad.

I asked him if he'd tell his friends about this at school and he said, "Grandpa, we can't even talk about guns at school."(ha) I should have remembered that.

My first gun to shoot other than the Ryder BB rifle I got when in the 3rd grade, was my dad's Sears made .22 semi rifle. Then, when I was around 14 y.o. I used my grandpa's ancient 16 gage single barrel shotgun...which just about knocked me over. Those two guns were all I shot untill many years later. That's how my love for guns started...and who knows where it'll lead me to now? I'm hoping that Cole will continue to be a gun man for life, too.

Talking

It all starts with just one "first time."

It's an event that won't be forgotten...and no doubt will be the motivation for a lot of future fun and expenses.

Cole and I have had several previous sessions of shooting my .177 pellet rifle in my back yard at a target approx. 20 yards away. Every time I've insisted on him following safety rules. Now he automatcally knows to keep that barrel pointing down or away from anyone. He's learned to keep his shooting finger off the trigger till he's ready to shoot. He's learned to keep his finger low on the trigger to make it pull easier. He's learned to squeeze the trigger gently. And, he's learned to stay behind me when I'm shooting.

These may sound a little basic...but that's where we started.

So...progressing up to the .22 Henry lever action rifle wasn't a huge step up from his earlier experiences. He's known for over a year that I am giving him this gun whenever his mother will allow him to keep it, etc. Now that he's gone through his first adventure into the "hunting" field, seen how deer stands are set up, and prowled around in the woods seeing the hunting environment...I believe he'll be wanting to go hunting ASAP...but only after he's taken the required hunter safety course required of any hunters in Missouri born after a certain date.

Then, because he wanted to try out his dad's Marlin 30.30 lever Action rifle, he got to shoot a couple of rounds. That didn't phase him much and after each shot he just laughed and said "WOW, that's fun." I believe he's got the gun "bug" now and will never look back.

...and Jerry, you're gonna launch a whole bunch of young kids on their first gun uses, too. Just think of the long range impact you'll have...and about how many of those youngsters will soon be joining the rest of us in a lifetime of great fun in the "gun" world.

yeah i know what you mean there ox. i have six kids and have been taking the two oldest shooting with me for a couple of yrs. now. and the younger ones are all jealous because they can't go.
i keep telling them that they will just have to wait until they reach a certain age and then i'll take them out.
like your grandson i started them out with a .177 airrifle in the backyard
before i took them to the range and introduced them to the "biggun" LOL
