wants an M16 or AR15, like the 1 he had when he was in the service. That was in the late 70's or early 80's. So he did a little searching and all the different part variation's made him confused. What he tells me is he wants a reliable shooter that shoots cheap, easy to find rounds and later he plans to add a scope.
Well right now there's no such thing as a cheap .223/5.56x45. In the 70's I think he would have had a M16A1. So basically you want an AR-15 with a 20 inch barrel and an A1 receiver. They may have had triangular handguards back then. I prefer round handguards myself though.
Get a 20" flat top receiver with a removable carry handle. That way he can add a scope easier later on.
You can also get a .22lr conversion that will let him shoot cheap ammo out of the same gun. These run about $150-200, and pay for themselves in about 500 rounds.
.223 ammo isn't cheap anymore, but it can be found at a reasonable price.
Isnt there a conversion kit that shoots the surplus ammo for the cz 52 and tokarevs... a 7.62 x 25 i believe... that would be a cheap alternative (in addition to being easily accessible) and a somewhat similar experience to the .223 kick. the flat top idea is a good one for a future scope mounting option with the detachable carrying handle and I believe the military was still using the A1 triangular furniture in that time period. 20 inch barrel and the fixed stock with the straight mags (if found in the 7.62 caliber) should work out well...

Model 1 sales should have pictures and options available (as well as conversion kits) even if you do not buy anything from them the pictures and names, as well as prices, should give you a good idea of what you are getting yourself into

there are a few companies that make this type of AR15, and any one you buy will me more reliable than anything your dad carried in the mud and muck of combat
I dont shoot the steel cases (I think wolf goes for around 6 or 7 here)- Heard the different diameter on the neck of the round in combination with extra residue from the dirtier brand in the barrel entry can cause jams when they let the round out and expand
something i just stay away from

i got a bushy lower and a stag upper, feed it steal wolf and HSM, and has been more reliable than my AK47, only had one failure to load and it was from a bad casing on a reload
