I have a Glenfield mod 25 Marlin and the safety is backwards. That is when it is on SAFE it is ready to fire and when it is on FIRE you can't pull the trigger. This is obviously not a very safe condition. I was wondering if anyone else has run accross this condition on a mod 25 or if it's just a factory screw up. The word FIRE is towards the rear of the gun and the word SAFE is towards the front. Is this the way it is stamped on other guns. The selector moves normal from one position to the other with no problem but the conditions are backwards. Maybe it's a rare find. Serial number is 27431401. Any suggestions.
Interesting. How old is the gun? Sounds like someone has maybe had the trigger group & safety apart and re-assembled it assbackward.
Or maybe someone has modified it with the trigger/safety from a newer 925 model; on the old model the safety was back to fire, forward for safe;I believe that this was changed on the newer model to the more normal forward to fire
I very much doubt if it came from the factory that way.
Why not pull it apart and see if it can be refitted the wrong way round.

Appreciate the advice. I'll take it apart tonight and have a look see. It's a fine shooter with a 3 by 9 variable scope. I'll let you know the results.
I'd think that forward should be FIRE, and to the rear should be SAFE. As in, push the safety forward towards the muzzle when you're ready to shoot. Most of my junk is like that.

Rondog, That is the current standard, as used on the newer models, the older models were different.

The M780 series Marlins, which includes your Glenfield had the safety forward-safe,back-fire.Other Co,s used to be that way too. Then, because centerfire bolts were forward-fire they changed the .22lr,s.The m880 series is forward-fire.I have a M780 but for some reason it never bothers me that it is forward-safe.Maybe because I have used so many hammer guns. ,,,sam.

Hi Sam, you still haven't come up with a reason for the OP's gun being ass-backward. He says that when the safety is in the fire position (as marked on the receiver) the gun is actually on 'safe' and will not fire.???

On some of the older guns...and it's fairly rare...the selector was made to be COVERING the word that wasn't used.
So when the knob was covering SAFE, and FIRE was visible...it was ready to fire.
I don't know if it was intentional, or just some guy in design that didn't quite wrap his head
around the idea of a safety...as old rifles didn't usually have safeties because people were
expected Not To Be Idiots instead of relying on a Safety

OK, guys. Here's a picture of the inner workings of the safety. I pondered on the mechanism and determined there is no way it could be reversed. It was definitely made this way.
