Pining Away over a Handgun

Did you ever come across a wheelgun in a shop that you would saw your leg off for ?? I mean something that you've wanted since a boy. One of my buddies (a VN Vet), who'll I'll call Eagle River Bill went through it today !!

He happens to own an original 1873 Win in 38-40. My local Gun Shop got in a 1st Generation Colt in 38-40 in what I would call nice - on the finish and needed parts. He pined for it long, as the Shop Owner wouldn't put a price on it !! Fishing for buyers you see. When he priced it at $1100, ER Bill wanted it bad. Generous Blue Book is $3400. He's like me and always cash poor, thank you Momma Army !! The pistol was out on display for about 30 minutes, and some suit walked in and bought it !! Bye-Bye !! No chance at it !!

I told him no sweaty-dah !! It's better to have been bought, than to pine for that SOB for 2 weeks !! I spent 3 weeks trying to convince my THEN wife that I needed an original Colt Walker. It was a major reason for the demise of our marriage !!

What was that SWEET deal that slipped past you !! I know this post may cost you a nightmare or two !!

I just realized I posted in the wrong place !! Someone please move !!

Steve

S&W 396 Titanium Mountainlite .44 special on my 21st birthday... I needed another $200 for it, but it just wasn't in the cards.

I have lusted over more vintage Rifles than Handguns, but I do remember a minty nickel-plated Beretta 85 that a dealer had a sweet price on. And then there was also a Baby Nambu that I thought I wanted for a very long time... really not sure why?

I saw a S&W double action 45 LC revolver at a gun show several months ago. Good condition and good price. I'd already "shot my wad" and decided to be responsible and wait and "pick one up later"...yeah, right. Havne't seen one anywhere and have been actively searching...Dumb!

Not rare or collectible I"m sure, but sure haven't had the chance to "pick one up" that I assumed I'd have.

Moral of the story: If you want it and can swing it, buy it.

I passed on an original Colt Paterson that was a 65% revolver, with a documented history,in 1971. I could have bought it for $2500. Today....75,000-100,000 bucks. Hind sight is always 20/20.

I had a Colt Anaconda in my hand back when they were producing them. I didn't have the cash at the time, so I put it back. 2 years later, when I did have the cash, Colt wasn't producing them anymore. I still wish I had that gun.

I can't remember how many times I found something nice, and walked past it thinking "I'll go back and get it later".
It's always gone by the time I get back!

Lust is the proper word for it but yes, I have done it. But, to me, the hunt of it is half the thrill of it. Sometimes you score, sometimes you don't.

Not a revolver, but a pistol. There was a Walther PP in one of the local gun shops with three extra mags for $800 on one visit. When I came back a couple of weeks later with the $800, it was gone.

What made me cry in my beer was learning that I could have laid it away with 25% down. WAAAAHH!

Oh man rehashing tragedy, I remember a clean Walther PP .32 with holster and spare mag for $400!

Are you sure it was a 1st Gen. Colt...Because it was priced More like a 3rd Gen.
A 1st Gen Colt 38-40 runs 10,000.00 to 50,000.00 and depends on serial Number for Mfg date and Condition...

I'll have to double check. But I remember Brad, et al, talking 1st Gen. I'll have to ask and get back to ya. I remember brad saying that it was worth at least 3k.

Colt pocket 9. When they came out I wanted one but the local shops did not have any. I was to lazy to order one and thought I would come across one cheap one day. Try to price one now.

That's not how I use credit cards, Moose. They are for emergency use only, like your car breaking down or a refrigerator failing. The main reason we are in halfway decent financial shape is if we can't pay cash for it, we don't buy it. Even for a waffenamt-stamped PP, I'm not going to break that rule.

We have friends with credit card debt in six figures and not a prayer of getting out from under without declaring bankruptcy and probably losing their home because they both just bought anything they wanted to, paid off some of the debt on their cards and saw their credit card limits just keep getting raised. Now their cards are all maxed out and they are up the creek without a paddle.

Up the creek without a paddle is not a place I want to end up. Been there once, courtesy of my ex-wife. It wasn't a fun trip getting back down the river, and I'm not going back there if I can help it.

But there is nothing wrong with using plastic to take advantage of something like a great price on a gun when you don't have the cash with you. Stores prefer plastic over checks. Just don't buy it unless you will pay it down to zero when the bill comes. To avoid confusion, the wife and I each have our individual credit cards and accounts.

I only have 1 credit card that I carry on trips and vacations for emergency use only. I'm pretty sure they are going to up my interest rate because of non-use, and it'll go in the garbage can.

Veterans and Family can get a USAA Credit card which is the Lowest Interest Rate in the Nation...about 1/2% a Month...

I did double check, and it was a 1st Gen 38-40 with a bad hammer.

I have a similar affliction; I get in my head that I MUST have a particular gun, in a particular configuration, usually something that is less common than usual. Days, weeks and months , CANNOT find my desire. Then I give up, and spend my allotment on someting else. A week later, the ads are full of the gun I originally wanted, sometimes at an unbeatable price!
Also, back in 69 or 70, I wrestled with a choice between a new Ruger Bearcat and a new H&R 929. Both 22's, of course. Mr. Practical decided on the H&R ( swing out cyl., double action, etc.) Oh, to be able to time travel!! BTW, both guns were priced at a hair over $40!
